Psalm 1 Blessed the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor taken the path of the sinful, nor sat among pernicious men. But who delights in the law of the Lord and will meditate upon his law day and night. He shall be as a tree that is planted near running water, That shall yield its fruit in due season, and its leaves shall not fall; And in whatever he does he shall prosper. Not so the wicked, not so: They are like chaff scattered by the wind from the face of the earth. Therefore the wicked shall not stand in judgment, nor sinners in the councils of the just, For the Lord knows the way of the just, but the way of the wicked shall cease to be. Psalm 2 Why did the Gentiles grow insolent and the people practice vain things? The kings of the earth stood side by side, the princes conspired against the Lord and against his anointed one. "Let us burst their bonds and throw off their yoke," they said. He who dwells in the heavens will laugh them down; the Lord will make light of them. But then in his anger he will speak to them, and in his wrath, strike terror in them: "It is I who was established king by him on Sion, his holy mountain." Proclaiming the Lord's command, The Lord said to me: "You are my son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will give you the nations as your lot, and the ends of the earth as your domain. You will shepherd them with an iron staff: like a potter's vessels you will shatter them." And now, you kings, take notice; be informed you who judge the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, exult in him with trembling. Accept his censure, lest the Lord be angry and you perish from the way of righteousness. When his wrath is suddenly kindled, blessed are all who trust in him. Psalm 3 O Lord, why do so many taunt me? Many are those who rise up against me; Many who say to me, "There is no salvation for him in his God." But you, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory: the one who lifts up my head. I cried out to the Lord in a loud voice, and from his holy mountain he heard me. As for me, I lay down and slept. Then I awoke, for the Lord will be my help. I will not fear ten thousand people arrayed against me all around. Arise, O Lord, and save me, my God! For you have stricken all who hated me without cause; you have shattered the sinners' teeth. This deliverance is the Lord's. Upon your people be your blessing! Psalm 4 When I cried out to him, the God of my righteousness heard me. You gave me relief in my distress: have mercy on me and hear my prayer. You sons of men, how long will you be hard-hearted? Why do you love vanity and practice deceit? Know that the Lord works wonders for his faithful. The Lord will hear me when I cry out to him. Be passionate, but do not sin; repent in your bed for the words of your heart. Offer a sacrifice of righteousness, and hope in the Lord. Many are those who say, "Who will show us good things?" The light of your countenance, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. You have put gladness in my heart. They were filled with the gifts of their wheat, wine and oil. I will lie down in peace to sleep, for you, O Lord, have let me dwell in hope. Psalm 5 Listen to my words, O Lord, attend to my complaint. Be attentive to the sound of my appeal, O my king and my God, for to you will I pray, O Lord! At dawn, you shall hear my voice; at daybreak, I will stand at your service and keep watch. For you are not a God whom iniquity pleases, neither shall evildoers dwell with you; Nor can lawless men stand in your sight. You loathe all those who work iniquity. You will destroy every liar: the Lord abhors all men of blood and deceit. But I, in the abundance of your loving mercy, will have access to your dwelling place. I will worship at your holy temple in reverence of you. O lord [sic], be my guide in your justice; because of my foes, clear my path before you. Indeed, in their mouth there is no truth, and their heart is vain. Their throat is but a gaping tomb, their words deceive. Judge them, O God; let them flounder in their evil plots. Because of their many crimes, cast them out, for they have risen against you, the Lord, And all who trust in you shall rejoice: they shall rejoice for evermore. And you will dwell among them, and all who love your name shall be glad, For you bless the just, O Lord. You have covered us as with a shield of grace. Psalm 6 O Lord, in your anger, rebuke me not, chasten me not in your wrath; Have pity on me, O Lord, for I am weak; heal me, O Lord, for my very bones are troubled. And my soul is upset exceedingly. But you, O Lord, how long? Relent, O Lord, and free my soul; out of your great love deliver me. For in death no one remembers you, and in Hades, who will sing your praise? I am exhausted with my moaning: shall I weep every night upon my bed and drench my couch with tears? My eyes are sore with weeping, I am worn out because of all my foes. Begone from me, all you evildoers, for the Lord has heard the sound of my lament. The Lord has heeded my appeal, the Lord has acceded to my prayer. Let all my foes be greatly shamed and vexed, let them be swiftly routed and mightily cast down. Psalm 7 O Lord my God, I have hoped in you: save me from my pursuers and deliver me, Lest the enemy as a lion seize my soul, while there is none to ransom or save me. O Lord my God, if I have done this, if there is injustice on my hands, If I have returned evil to those who wronged me, may I fall exhausted at the hand of my foes. May the enemy then hunt down my soul and seize it; May he trample my life to the ground and grind my honor to dust. Arise, O Lord, in your anger be exalted in my foes remotest lands: Awake, O Lord my God in your commanding will. And the assembly of peoples shall surround you, and you will regard it from on high. The Lord is the judge of nations: judge me, O Lord, according to my merit, and to the innocence that is mine. Put an end to the malice of the wicked and sustain the just, O God who test minds and hearts, Rightful is my help from God who saves the upright of heart. God the just judge, strong and patient, does not show his anger every day. If you do not repent, he will furbish his sword. He has bent his bow and made it ready. He has fitted it with implements of death; his arrows will bring fiery ruin. Behold the sinner in his wickedness: he conceived in pain and brought forth iniquity; He opened a pit, and covered it up; he shall fall into the very hole he dug. The evil he wrought shall return upon his head, and the wrongs he has done, upon his skull. I will give thanks to the Lord according to his justice And sing praise to the name of the Lord most high. Psalm 8 Lord, our Lord, how wonderful your name in all the earth. For your excellence has been exalted above the heavens. From the mouth f babes and sucklings, you have fashioned perfect praise Because of your enemies, to silence the hostile and the vengeful. For I will look upon the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have established. What is man, that you should be mindful of him, Or the son of man, that you should have regard for him? You have made him a little lower than the angels, crowning him with glory and honor. And you have set him over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, All of the sheep and oxen, yea, even the beasts of the field, The birds of the sky and the fishes of the sea, and all that moves along ocean pathways. Lord, our Lord, how wonderful your name in all the earth! Psalm 9 O Lord, I will give thanks to you with my whole heart; I will recount all your wonderful works, I will be glad and exult in you, I will sing to your name, O most high! When my enemies are turned back, they will weaken and perish before you; For you held up my cause and my right while seated on the throne meting justice. You rebuked the Gentiles, and the ungodly perished. You blotted out their name forever, unto ages of ages. The enemy's swords have failed utterly, and you have laid cities to waste; Their memory has been erased resoundingly, but the Lord endures forever. He has prepared his throne for judgment, and he will judge the world with justice, and the Gentiles with uprightness. The Lord has become a haven for the poor, a timely help in affliction. And let those who know your name hope in you, O Lord, For you have not failed those who seek you. Sing praise to the Lord who dwells in Sion; proclaim his deeds among the nations, For he remembered, as the avenger of their blood; he has not forgotten the pleas of the poor. Have mercy on me, O Lord: consider how my foes have struck me down, O you who raise me up from the very gates of death, That I may proclaim all your praises at the gates of the daughters of Sion, For I will greatly rejoice in your salvation. The nations are sunk in the pit of their own making; In the snare they concealed, their own foot is caught. In executing judgment, the Lord is made manifest; the [sic] sinful man is trapped by the works of his hands. Let sinners be confined to Hades, all those nations that forget God, For the poor shall never be forgotten; the patience of the needy shall never be in vain. Arise, O Lord, let not man prevail; let the Gentiles be judged in your presence. O Lord, appoint a lawmaker over them; let the Gentiles know they are only mortals. Psalm 10 O Lord, why do you stand aloof? Why do you ignore us in good times and bad? While the godless man acts with arrogance, the poor is hotly pursued. The wicked are caught in their own devices, for the sinner boasts in his secret lusts, while the evildoer is blessed. The sinner has provoked the Lord, in the excess of his pride he refuses to seek him. For him there is no God; his ways are forever profane; your judgments are far from his thoughts They will hold sway over all his enemies, for he said in his heart, "I shall not be shaken by adversity from generation to generation." His mouth is full of cursing, bitterness and fraud; under his tongue are mischief and deceit. He lies in ambush with rich men to slay the innocent; he lurks like a lion in its den to ravish the poor. To ravish the poor man when he lures him out, He crouches to fall upon the poor until he can Lord [sic] it over him, For he said in his heart," [sic] God has forgotten! He has turned away his face so as never to see." Arise, O Lord God! Let your hand be lifted up; forget not the poor. Why has the wicked provoked God, for he said in his heart: "He will not seek to know!" You do see, for you witness the trouble and wrath that deliver them into your hands. The poor has been left to you; you were a helper to the orphan. Break the arm of the sinner and the wicked; his sin shall be challenged: he shall be found no more., [sic] The Lord shall reign forever, unto ages of ages; The Gentile shall vanish from his land. The lord [sic] has heard the longing of the poor. Your ear inclined to their heart's good will, To judge for the orphan and the meek, that man may no longer boast upon the earth. I have trusted in the Lord, How can you say to my soul, "Flee to the mountains as the sparrow?" For behold: the sinners have bent their bow, their arrows are ready in the quiver To shoot in the moonless night at the upright of heart. If they pull down what you had built, what can the righteous do? The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord; his throne is in heaven. His eyes look upon the poor; his vision probes the sons of men. The Lord tests both the just and the unjust. The man who loves injustice hates his own soul. He shall rain upon sinners snares, fire and brimstone; a stormy blast shall be the share of their cup. For the Lord is just and a lover of justice; his face is turned toward righteousness. Psalm 11 Save me, O Lord, for the pious man is no more, for truth has faded among the children of men. Everyone has spoken vanity to his neighbor. Their lips deceive, they utter lies. May the Lord silence all lying lips and every boastful tongue. Those who said, "We will exalt our tongue; our lips are our own. Who is lord over us?" "Because of the misery of the poor, and because of the sighing of the needy, Now will I rise," said the Lord, "I will place them in safety, I will speak of it openly." The words of the Lord are sacred words, as silver tried in fire. Proved in a furnace of clay purified seven times. You, O Lord, will safeguard us and save us from this generation forever. The ungodly surround us on every side. In your greatness, you have exalted the sons of men. Psalm 12 How long, O Lord, will you forget me? Forever? How long will you turn your face away from me? How long shall I harbor unrest in my mind and sorrows in my heart? Every day? Look upon me, and hear me O Lord my God! Give light to my eyes lest I sleep unto death, Lest my enemy boast, "I have prevailed over him." My oppressor would rejoice if I were overthrown. But I have hoped in your loving mercy. My heart will exult in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord who has shown me kindness; I will sing psalms to the name of the Lord most high. Psalm 13 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They have become corrupt and hateful in their ways. Not one of them does any good, not even one. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if any understood, or searched for God. They have all gone astray, become corrupt. There is not one that does good: no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulcher; with their tongues, they have used deceit. The venom of asps is under their lips, and their mouth is full of cursing and gall. Their feet are swift to shed blood, destruction and misery are on their paths. And the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God in their eyes. Will not evildoers be aware of this, who devour my people as they would eat bread? They have not called upon the Lord. There did they fear where there was no fear, for God is with the righteous generation. You have dishonored the will of the afflicted, but the Lord is his hope. Who will bring Israel's salvation out of Sion? When the Lord brings back his captive people, let Jacob exult and Israel be glad. Psalm 14 O Lord, who shall lodge in your temple, and who shall dwell on your holy mountain? The man who is blameless and does justice, speaking truth within his heart; Who has not deceived with his tongue nor harmed his neighbor, nor spread a rumor against those who live near him. In his sight, an evildoer is nothing, but he honors those who fear the Lord. He swears to his neighbor, and keeps his word; he has not lent his money at usury; He has not received bribes against the innocent, he that acts this way shall never be shaken. Psalm 15 Safeguard me, O Lord, for I have hoped in you. I said to the Lord, "You are my Lord, for you have no need of my good." As to the holy one who live in his land, he has magnified all his favor in them. Their weaknesses have been multiplied, afterwards, they hurried. I will not convene their bloody assemblies, neither will my lips mention their name. The Lord is the share of my inheritance and my cup; you have restored my inheritance to me. For me, the boundaries have fallen in the best places. Yes, I have a most excellent inheritance. I will bless the Lord who has counseled me: my own heart teaches me even in the night. I have always had the Lord before my eyes, for he is at my right hand, that I be not shaken. Therefore my heart rejoiced and my tongue exulted, and my body also felt secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor suffer your faithful one to see corruption. You have shown me the ways of life: you will fill me with the joy of your presence. At your right hand, there are endless delights. Psalm 16 Listen, O Lord to my just cause hear my prayer from innocent lips. Let my vindication come directly from you: let my eyes witness what is right. You have probed my heart, you have visited by night, you have tested me as with fire, And unrighteousness has not been found in me, so that my mouth does not speak wrongly. As for the works of men, through the words of your lips I have guarded myself against unlawful ways. Guide my steps along your paths, that my feet stumble not. I have cried out, and you heard me, O God; incline your ear to me and hear my words. Show the marvels of your mercies, O you who save those who hope in you! Keep me as the apple of your eye from those who resist your right hand. Shelter me under the cover of your wings from the face of the ungodly who have oppressed me. My enemies have surrounded my soul. They have closed their hardened hearts; Their mouth has spoken arrogantly; they have cast me out and surrounded me. They have set up their sights so as to throw me to the ground; They lay in wait for me as a lion stalks its prey, or as a young lion waiting in ambush. Arise, O Lord, face up to them and cast them down! Deliver my soul from ungodly men. Lift up your double-edged sword against the enemies of your hand. O Lord, cast them off from the face of the earth; cut them off in the prime of their life. Though their bellies were filled with your secret gifts, they gorged themselves with filth, and left the remains to their young. But I will appear in righteousness before you, and shall be satisfied at the sight of your glory. Psalm 17 I will love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my refuge and my safety. My God is my help, I will hope in him, my defense and the might of my salvation, my savior! I will call upon the Lord with praises, and I shall be delivered from my enemies. The throes of death surrounded me, and the torrents of impiety overwhelmed me. The pangs of Hades came round about me, and the snares of death threatened me. When I was afflicted, I called upon the Lord, and cried out to my God. From his holy mountin, he heard my voice, and my cry shall reach his ears. And their were tremors and quakes on earth, and the mountains' foundations were shaken, And they were made to move, for God was angry with them. In his wrath, a smoke was wafted, and fire burst into flame at his presence, and embers were kindled by it. And he made heaven incline and came [sic] down, and thick darkness was under his feet. And he rode upon cherubim and flew; he flew on the wings of the wind. And he made darkness his hiding place. Around him was his tabernacle: dark water in the clouds of the air. At the brightness of his presence, the clouds shed hail and fiery coals. And the Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High made heard his voice. And he sent forth his weapons and scattered them, and with repeated lightning strikes he routed them; And the sources of the waters appeared, and the foundations of the world were revealed at your rebuke, O Lord, at the breathing of the breath of your wrath. He reached out from on high and seized me, he drew me out of deep waters. He will save me from my mighty foes, and from those who hate me, when they proved too powerful for me. They faced me on the day of my affliction, but the Lord was my defense against them, And he brought me out onto open ground. He will save me, for he is pleased with me. And the Lord will reward me according to my virtue: since my hands are clean, he will reward me. For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and not departed wickedly from my God. For all his judgments were before me, I never abandoned his just decrees, And I shall be blameless with him, and guard myself against my sinfulness. And the Lord will reward me according to my virtue, And according to the purity of my hands in his sight. With the faithful, you will be faithful, and blameless with the blameless man. The chose you will treat as chosen; the perverse, you will turn aside. For you will save a humble people, and chasten the eyes of the proud. For you, O Lord, will light my lamp, my God, you will light up my darkness. For by you shall I be saved from bandits; and by my God shall I scale the wall. As for my God, his way is perfect; the Lord's sayings are proven by fire. He is a protector of all who hope in him, for who is God, but the Lord, And who is God except our God? It is God who girds me with strength, and has made my way blameless: Who strengthens my feet like those of a stag, and sets me securely on high. While teaching my hands the arts of war, you have made my arms like a brazen bow. You have made me secure in my salvation, and your right hand has sustained me. And your training upheld me to the end, and your discipline shall teach me. You have smoothed the way beneath me, and my footsteps have not faltered. I will pursue my enemies and overtake them, and not turn back until they are destroyed. I will dash them to pieces so they cannot stand: they shall fall under my feet. For you girded me with strength for war, and crushed beneath me all who rose against me, And made my enemies show me their backs, and destroyed those who hated me. They cried out, but there was no one to save them, even to the Lord, but he did not listen. I will quash them like the mud of the street, and grind them as fine as dust before the wind. Deliver me from the people's wranglings; you shall make me head of the Gentiles. A people I knew not has served me. As soon as they heard, they obeyed me. The foreigners feigned obedience; then their sons grew weak And came limping out of their paths [sic] The Lord lives, and blessed be my God, and let the God of my salvation be exalted. It is God who assured my revenge, and subdued the nations under me. You delivered me from angry foes: You will exalt me Above those who rise up against me. You will deliver me from the lawless man. Therefore will I proclaim you, O Lord, among the Gentiles, and sing praises to your name, God increases his king's victories, and shows favor to David, his anointed one and his seed forever. Psalm 18 The heavens proclaim God's glory, and the firmament declares the work of his hands. Day converses with day, and night announces knowledge to night. There are no speeches nor words in which their voices are not heard. Their sound has reached out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. He has set his habitation in the sun who like a bridegroom comes out of his chamber, Exulting like a giant about to run his course. From the outmost end of heaven is his rising, and his going down, to the other end of heaven. And no one shall be able to hide away from his heat. The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring souls; The revelations of the Lord are trustworthy, making the simple wise. The statutes of the Lord are just, gladdening the heart. The command of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eye. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring for ever and ever. The judgments of the Lord are true, altogether justified. To be desired more than gold, and more than many precious stones. Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb, for your servant keeps them, and in so doing there is great reward. Who is aware of his own transgressions? Purge me of my unwitting faults And against the sins of others, protect your servant. Lest they control me, then shall I be blameless, and I shall be cleared of a grievous sin. So shall words from my mouth and thoughts from my heart be every pleasing to you, O Lord, my helper and redeemer. Psalm 19 May the Lord hear you on the day of affliction; may the name of the God of Jacob shield you. May he send you help from his sanctuary and aid out of Sion, remembering all your sacrifices and prizing your holocausts. May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill your every wish. Let us rejoice in your deliverance and magnify the name of God: may the Lord grant all you ask. Now I know the Lord has saved his anointed one: he will answer him from his holy heaven. Salvation is contained within the power of your right hand. Some boast of chariots, others of horses, but we will glory in the name of the Lord our God. They have tripped and have fallen, but we will glory in the name of the Lord our God. O Love, save the king, and hear us whenever we call upon you. Psalm 20 O Lord, the king shall rejoice in your strength, and delight in your deliverance. You have granted him his soul's desire, and not denied the plea of his lips. You have bestowed goodly blessing upon him, you have set upon his head a crown of precious stones. He asked you for life, and you gave him length of days forever. Great is his glory because of your salvation. You will give him splendor and majesty, for you will grant him favors for evermore. You will gladden him with the joy of your presence, for the King's trust is in the Lord, And through the mercy of the Highest, he shall not waver. Let your hand seek all your enemies; let your right hand find all those who hate you. You will make them burn as in a blazing furnace when you appear to them. In his wrath the Lord will confuse them utterly, and fire shall consume them. You will bar their offspring from the earth, and their seed from among the sons of men. For they plotted evil against you: they devised a plan they could never fulfill. For you will put the remnant to flight, and you will fix your gaze upon them. Be exalted, O Lord, in your power: we will sing and praise your mighty deeds. Psalm 21 O God, my God, give heed to me: Why have you forsaken me? The tally of my sins puts salvation far from me. O God, I will cry out to you by day, but you will not reply; by night, and there is no relief for me. But you, the praise of Israel, dwell in a sanctuary. Our fathers hoped in you, they hoped, and you saved them. They cried out to you, and they were freed, and were not disappointed [sic] But I am a worm, and not a man, a disgrace among men and the scorn of the people. All who saw me derided me. They made faces, they wagged their head: "He hoped in the Lord: let him deliver him; let him save him since he is pleased with him." For you are the one who brought me from the womb, my hope since I was a suckling. I was committed to you at birth; you are my God since my mother's womb. Stand not away from me, for trouble is at hand, and there is none to help. A herd of bulls has surrounded me, powerful bulls have beset me. They have opened their mouth against me, as a ravening and roaring lion. I have turned into water, and all my bones are racked; My heart has become like melting wax, turning to liquid inside me. My strength has gone dry as a potsherd, and my tongue is cleaved to my throat, and you have brought me down to the dust of death. For many dogs have surrounded me; they assembly of the wicked has encompassed me. They pierced my hands and my feet; they counted all my bones; they observed me and gaped at me. They shared my garments among themselves, and cast lots for my cloak. But you, O Lord, do not delay my help; hasten to my aid. Deliver my life from the sword, my only life from, [sic] the claws of the dog. Save me from the lion's maw, and my lowliness from the horn of the unicorn; I will declare your name to my brethren; In [sic] the midst of the assembly, I will sing praise to you. O you who fear the Lord, praise him; all you seed of Jacob, glorify him; offspring of Israel be in awe of him, For he was not aloof, nor did he grown angry when the poor made their plea, Nor has he turned his face away from me. but [sic] when I cried out to him, he heard me. In the great gathering, you are my boast; I will make my vows before those who fear him. The poor shall eat and be satisfied, and those who seek the Lord shall praise him. May their hearts live for ever and ever. All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord. And all the families of nations shall worship before him, For the Lord's is the dominion, and he rules over the nations. All the rich of the earth have eaten and bowed; all mortals shall fall before him. And my soul lives for him, and my posterity shall serve him. The generation to come shall be known to the Lord and they shall proclaim his justice To a people yet to be born, whom the Lord has made. Psalm 22 The Lord is my shepherd , I shall not want. In a verdant pasture, he has made me dwell; By restful waters, he has nourished me; he has restored my soul. He has guided me along righteous paths for the sake of his name. Yea, even if I should walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, these have comforted me. You have set up a table before me in the presence of my oppressors. You have anointed my head with oil, your cup cheers me like the best wine . [sic] And your loving mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and [sic] I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for a great number of days. Psalm 23 The earth is the Lord's and the fullness of it, the world and all that dwell in it. He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. Who may go up to the mountains of the Lord, and who may stand in his holy place? One whose hands are blameless and whose heart is pure; Who has not received his life in vain nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor. He shall receive a blessing from the Lord and mercy from God his savior. Such is the generation of those who seek him, Who seek the presence of the God of Jacob. Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors, and the king of glory shall come in. Who is this king of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your gates, you princes, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors, and the king of glory shall come in. Who is this king of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the king of glory. Psalm 24 To you, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul; O my God, I have trusted in you. Let me not be disappointed, nor let my enemies laugh me to scorn. For all who abide with you, shall escape from shame. Let shame befall those who are wantonly lawless. Make known to me your ways, O Lord, show me your paths; Guide me in your truth, and teach me, for you are my God and savior, and I have endured with you all the day. Remember your loving kindness, O Lord, and your mercy, for they are for ever. Do not count the sins of my youth nor of my ignorance. Remember me mercifully because of your goodness, O Lord. Kind and true is the Lord: he will set the wayward right. He will give good judgment to the meek; he will teach the meek his ways. All the ways of the Lord are mercy and truth to those who seek his covenant and his revelations. For the sake of your name, O Lord, forgive also my sin, for it is great. Be there a man who fears the Lord, him the Lord will teach in the way he has chosen. His soul shall dwell in prosperity, and his children shall inherit the land. The Lord is the strength of those who fear him, and he will reveal his covenant to them. My eyes are always upon the Lord, for he will loose my feet from the snare. Look upon me and have mercy on me, for I am alone and destitute. The troubles of my heart are increased: deliver me from my anguish. Consider my misery and my pain and forgive all my sins. Behold my enemies: how they have multiplied and have hated me with undeserved hatred. Guard my life, and deliver me, that I may not be shamed, for I trusted you. The blameless and the righteous stood with me because I waited for you, O Lord. Deliver Israel, O Lord, of all his afflictions. Psalm 25 Judge me, O Lord, for I have walked in my innocence. Since I hope in the Lord, I shall not waver. Test me, O Lord, and try me. Purify as with fire my senses and my heart. For your merciful love is before my eyes, and I am content with your truth. I have not sat in council with profane men nor will I consort with transgressors. I have hated the gathering of evildoers, and will not sit with ungodly men. I will wash my hands in innocence and walk around your altar, O Lord. To hear the voice of praise and declare all your wonderful works. O Lord, I have loved the beauty of your house, and the place where your glory abides. Destroy not my spirit along with the wicked, nor take my life with bloodthirsty men. Who have crimes on their hands, whose right hand is filled with bribes. As for me, I have walked in my innocence: redeem me and have mercy on me. My foot is set on a straight path. In the gathering, I will bless you, Lord. Psalm 26 The Lord is my light and my savior: whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defender of my life: of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers closed in on me to devour me, My oppressors and my enemies, they grew weak and fell. Should an army encamp against me, my heart would not be afraid; Should war be waged against me, even then would I trust. One thing I have asked the Lord; this will I earnestly seek: That I should dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; That I should see the Lord's fair beauty, and contemplate his temple. For on the day of my affliction, he hid me in his dwelling place. He sheltered me in the recesses of his tabernacle; he set me upon a rock. And now, behold, he has raised me above my enemies. I circled his tabernacle, and within it, I offered a sacrifice of joy. I will burst out in song, and intone canticles to the Lord. O Lord, hear my voice: I have cried out to you: have mercy on me and listen to me. My heart said to you: "I have sought your presence." O Lord, I will seek your countenance. Turn not your face away from me: in your anger: [sic] do not shun your servant. Be my helper, forsake me not, and O God, my savior, despise me not. Though my father and mother have abandoned me, yet the Lord has taken me to himself. Instruct me, O Lord, in your ways, keep me on a straight path far from my foes. Deliver me not into the hands of those who would afflict me, For false witnesses have stood up against me, and injustice has lied against itself. I believe I will see the Lord's bounty in the land of the living. Abide in the Lord, be strong, and stouthearted. Yea, abide in the Lord! Psalm 27 To you O Lord, I have cried out! O God, be not silent towards me, Lest in your silence in my regard, I be likened to those who go down in the pit. Hear the sound of my pleas when I pray to you, when I lift up my hands to your holy temple. Do not drag my soul away with sinners, and do not let me perish with evildoers. They speak peace with their neighbors, but evils are in their hearts. Repay them according to their works, and according to the malice of their wiles. Reward them according to the works of their hands, pay them off for their misdeeds. Render them their just deserts. [sic] Because they have not understood the Lord's deeds. nor [sic] the works of his hands, you shall cast them down and not build them up. Blessed be the Lord, for he has heard the sound of my plea. The Lord is my helper and my defender: in him my heart has hoped and I have found help. My body has found new life. I will praise him wholeheartedly. The Lord is the strength of his people and the defender of the saving deeds of his anointed one. Save your people and bless your inheritance, Shepherd them, and exalt them forever. Psalm 28 Bring to the Lord, you children of God, bring to the Lord young rams; Bring to the Lord glory due his name; worship the Lord in his holy court. The voice of the Lord rings upon the waters, the God of glory has thundered, the Lord reigns over vast waters. The voice of the Lord is might; the voice of the Lord is majesty. The voice of the Lord shatters the cedars; the Lord will splinter the cedars of Lebanon, And make them as small as a calf of Lebanon, and the beloved one, as the foal of the unicorn. The voice of the Lord bursts into fiery flame, the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness, and the Lord will convulse the wilds of Cades. The voice of the Lord restores the hind, and it will clear the forests, and in his temple, all people sing, "Glory!" The Lord will make his dwelling on the flood, and he will be enthroned as king forever. The Lord will give strength to his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace, [sic] Psalm 29 O Lord, I will exalt you, for you lifted me up, and did not let my foes gloat over me. O Lord my God, I cried out to you, and you healed me. O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Hades; you have saved me from those who go down to the pit. Sing to the Lord, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks at the thought of his holiness, For there is scourging in his wrath, but life in his good pleasure. Weeping may linger at nightfall, but there will be joy at dawn. I said in the days of my abundance, "I shall never be distressed." O Lord, in your good pleasure, you added strength to my splendor. Then you turned away your face, and I was troubled. I will cry out to you, O Lord, and to my God I will make a plea. What gain would there be if my blood were shed? If I were to go down to destruction? Will the dust give praise to you, or faithfulness declare your truth? The Lord heard and pitied me; the Lord has become my helper. You have turned my mourning into joy, you have rent my sack-cloth and girded me with gladness. That in my splendor I may sing praise to you, and never slumber. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you for evermore! Psalm 30 In you, O Lord, I have hoped: let me never be put to shame. In your justice, save me and deliver me; Incline your ear to me and hasten to set me free. Be for me a protecting God, and a sheltering abode to save me, Because you are my strength and my refuge, and for the sake of your name, you will guide me and sustain me. You will save me from this snare they have set for me, because you are my protection, O Lord, Into your hands I will commend my spirit: you have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth! You detest those who keep worthless idols, but as for me, I have hoped in the Lord. I will rejoice and exult in your loving mercy, for you have looked upon my distress and relieved my life of its pain. You have not trapped me in the enemies' hands, but set me free in wide open space. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am oppressed: sorrow afflicts my eyes, my soul, my whole body, [sic] For my life is spent with grieving, and my years with groaning. My strength has been sapped by misery, and my bones have wasted away. To all my enemies, I am an object of reproach, even more so to my neighbors, and to my friends, a horror. Those who see me on the street flee from me. I am forgotten out of mind, [sic] as one dead; I have become like a broken vessel; [sic] For I heard many whispering censure all around me. When they all came together against me, they plotted to take my life. But I have hoped in you, O Lord; I said, "You are my God!" My fate is in your hands. Deliver me from the clutches of my foes, and from those who persecute me. Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your mercy. O Lord, let me not be confounded, for I have cried out to you. But shame upon the wicked! May they be cast into Hades! Let those lying lips be struck dumb which denigrate the just with pride and scorn. O Lord, how vast is the wealth of your goodness which you have in store for those who fear you, Which you prepared for those who hope in you before the face of the children of men. In the secret of your presence, you will hide them away from the tumult of men; Beneath your tent, you will shelter them away from the strife of tongues. Blessed is the Lord, for his mercy was shown to me as to a city under siege. I had cried out in my alarm. I am cast far away from your sight. Then, O Lord, you heard the sound of my prayer as I cried out to you. Love the Lord, all you his faithful ones, for the Lord seeks out the true. But with full retribution he requites the actions of the arrogant. Take courage, and be stout of heart, all you who hope in the Lord! Psalm 31 Blessed are those whose sins are forgiven, and those whose transgressions are covered. Blessed is he to whom the Lord imputes no evil. and [sic] in whose speech there is no guile. As long as I kept silent, my body wasted away from my groaning all the day. Day and night, your hand was heavy upon me. I twisted in pain as if a thorn were thrust in me. Then I confessed my sin and hid not my wickedness. I said, "I will confess my sin to the Lord against myself," and you forgave my heart's impiety. Therefore shall every faithful pray to you whenever the time is right. Only in the rush of flood waters shall they not reach him. You are my shelter from the trouble that presses in on me, my joy, to save me from those who beseige me. I will instruct you and teach you where to go; I will keep my eye set upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule that lack understanding: whose jaw must be curbed with bit and rein, else they will not follow you. Many are the ills that befall the sinner; but loving kindness surrounds the man who hopes in the Lord [sic] Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones, and glory, all you upright of heart. Psalm 32 Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous ones: praise becomes the just. Praise the Lord on the harp, play to him on the ten-string lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully with shouts of gladness. For the word of the Lord holds true, and all his works are trustworthy. He loves mercy and justice. The earth is full of the Lord's loving mercy. The heavens were made by the word of the Lord, and all their host, by the breath of his mouth, [sic] He gathers the waters of the sea as in a goatskin, He stores them as in bottomless wells. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all earth-dwellers stand in awe of him. For he spoke, and all things came to be; he commanded, and they were created. The Lord confounds the aims of nations, he brings to nought [sic] the peoples' designs, and the plans of the princes he foils. But the counsel of the Lord endures forever, the thoughts of his heart, from age to age. Blessed be the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he has chosen as his lot. The Lord looked down from heaven and beheld all the children of men. From his eternal dwelling place, he looks upon all who dwell on earth, [sic] He who fashioned the heart of each one and knows all their works. A king is not saved by a mighty host, nor a giant by his great strength. A powerful steed is useless for victory, for all its strength it cannot save a man. The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, upon those who hope in his merciful love. To deliver them from death, and keep them alive in times of famine. Our soul waits on the Lord, for he is our helper and defender, [sic] For our heart shall rejoice in him, and we have hoped in his holy name. O Lord, let your loving mercy be upon us, even as we have put our hope in you. Psalm 33 I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall be ever on my lips. My soul shall glory in the Lord: Let the meek hear and rejoice. Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Approach the Lord, and be enlightened, and your face shall never be shamed. This wretched man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and delivered him from all his afflictions. The angel of the Lord will stand guard around those who fear the Lord, and save them. Taste and see how good the Lord is. Blessed is the man who hopes in him. Fear the Lord, all you his faithful ones, for those who fear him shall want for nothing. The rich have become poor and hungry, but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good. Come, children, hear me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Which of you desires life, and loves to see good days? Keep your tongue from wickedness, and your lips from deceitful speech; Turn away from evil, and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are upon the just and his ears are open to their pleas; The face of the Lord is turned against sinners to erase their memory from the earth. The just cried out, and the Lord heard them, and he delivered them from all their trials. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted, and he will save the humble in spirit. Many are the trials of the righteous, but out of them all, the Lord will deliver them. He protects every bone in their body: not a single one of them shall be broken. The death of sinners is painful; those who hate justice shall be damned. The Lord will redeem the souls of his servants, and none of those who hope in him shall be lost. Psalm 34 O Lord, judge those who injure me. Fight against those who fight against me; Take up shield and buckler, and arise to my defense. Unsheathe a sword, and cut off my oppressors; say to my soul, "I am your salvation." Let those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded, let those who plot against me be turned back and shamed. Let them be as dust before the wind, while an angel of the Lord afflicts them. Let their way be dark and slippery, while an angel of the Lord pursues them. Without cause, they have hidden for me their destructive snares; vainly have they insulted me, Let a snare they do not suspect come upon them, and the trap they had hidden seize them, and let them fall in the very same pit. But my soul shall exalt in the Lord; it shall delight in his salvation. My very bones shall proclaim: "O Lord, who is compared to you?" Saving the poor from the hands of those too strong for him, Yea, the poor and the needy from those who plunder him. False witnesses have come up, and questioned me on things I did not know. They returned me evil for good, and bereavement to my soul. But I, when they disturbed me, put on sack-cloth, And humbled by soul with fasting, and my prayer shall come back to me. I treated them well, as a neighbor or brother; I humbled myself as one grieving and sad; And yet they rejoiced against me, and many scourges were thrust upon me. They were scattered, but showed no remorse; they tried my patience and sneered at me; With great contempt, they gnashed their teeth at me. O Lord, when will you look upon me: Deliver my soul from their villainy, and my life from the lions. I will give thanks to you in a great assembly; on a mighty throng, I will praise you. Let not my unjust foes gloat over me, those who hate me without cause and wink; For while they spoke to me in peace, yet in their anger they plotted treachery; And they opened wide their mouth against me, and said, "Ha, ha, we have seen!" You, O Lord, have seen: do not remain silent. O Lord, do not withdraw from me. Awake, O Lord, and attend to my cause, to my right, O my God and my Lord! Vindicate me, O Lord, according to your justice, O Lord my God; let them not gloat over me. Let them not say in their hearts, "Good! Good! This was our hearts' desire!" Neither let them say: "We have devoured him!" Let them be confounded and shamed together who find pleasure in my misfortune. Let them be covered with shame and infamy who speak insolently against me. Let them rejoice and be glad, who seek my vindication, and let them say at all times: "The Lord be magnified, who desires the wellbeing [sic] of his servant." And my tongue shall proclaim your justice and your praise, all day long. Psalm 35 The transgressor says within himself, when he sins that he need have no fear of God. For he has beguiled himself into believing that his sin and hatred will not be found out. The words of his mouth are evil and crafty; he will not understand how to do good. He devises lawless deeds upon his bed, surrendering to every evil way and not detesting it. O Lord, your loving mercy reaches up to heaven, and your truth, to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mountain of God, and your judgments, like bottomless depths. O Lord, you will save both people and beasts. O God, how you have increased you loving mercy! The children of men shall trust in the shelter of your wings. They shall be sated with the abundance of your house; you will refresh them from the stream of your delights; For in you is the fountain of life: in your light, we shall see light. Extend your loving mercy upon those who confess you, and your justice upon the upright of heart. Let not the foot of pride trip me, nor the sinners, [sic] hand upset me. For there all the evildoers have fallen: they have been cast out, and cannot rise. Psalm 36 Do not strive to outdo evildoers, nor emulate the wicked, For they shall quickly wither like grass, and soon wilt like garden weeds. Hope in the Lord, and do good, settle in the land and feed on its wealth. Delight is in the Lord, and he shall grant you the wishes of your heart. Make known your way to the Lord; trust in him: he will act, And he will bring forth your justice as light and your vindication as high noon. Submit to the Lord and pray to him; do not envy if the sinner prospers on his way. Give up anger, and forsake wrath, avoid jealousy so as not to sin. For evildoers shall be destroyed, but they who serve the Lord shall inherit the earth. In just a little while, the sinner shall be no more, and though you seek his place, you shall find it not. But the meek shall inherit the earth, and revel in abundant prosperity. The sinner shall observe the just man and gnash his teeth at him. But the Lord shall laugh at him, since he foresees that his day is coming. Sinners have drawn their swords and bent their bows to cast down the poor and the needy and slay the upright of heart. But their swords shall pierce their own hearts, and their bows shall be broken. The little the just man possesses is better than the great wealth of the sinner. For the arms of sinners shall be broken, while the Lord upholds the just. The Lord knows the ways of the sinless, and their inheritance shall be forever. They shall not be ashamed when the times are hard, and in days of famine, they shall eat their fill. For the sinners shall perish, and the Lord's enemies, though honored and exalted, shall vanish like somke. The sinner borrows, and does not repay, but the just is generous and gives. For those who bless him shall inherit the earth, and those who curse him shall be utterly crushed. The steps of a man are guided by the Lord, and he will take pleasure in his way. ]When he falls, he will not be hurt, for the Lord grasps his hand. I was once young, but now am old, yet I have not seen the just forsaken, nor his offspring begging for bread. He is merciful, and gives the whole day long, and his descendants will be for him a blessing. Turn away from evil, and do good, and you will live for ever and ever, For the Lord loves justice. and [sic] he will not forsake his faithful ones; they shall be safeguarded for evermore. The blameless shall be avenged, but the seed of the wicked shall be utterly crushed; For the just shall inherit the earth, and dwell upon it unto ages of ages. The mouth of the just shall utter wisdom, and his tongue shall speak of justice. God's law lives in his heart, and his steps shall not falter. The sinner keeps his eyes on the just, and seeks to put him to death, But the Lord will not abandon him to his hands, nor condemn him when he is judged. Wait upon the Lord, and keep his ways, and he will exalt you to inherit the earth: you shall witness the destruction of the wicked. I saw the wicked exalting himself and towering like the cedars of Lebanon, [sic] And I passed by, and, behold, he was no more, and I sought him, but his place could not be found. Preserve innocence, and have regard for righteousness, for the man of peace shall have posterity; [sic] But sinners shall all be brought to naught; the remnant of the ungodly shall be utterly destroyed. But the salvation of the just is of the Lord, and he is their refuge in times of distress. And the Lord shall help them and deliver them And rescue them from sinners and save them because they have hoped in him. Psalm 37 O Lord, in your anger rebuke me not, chastise me not in your wrath. Your arrows have bored into me, and your hand weighs heavily upon me. Because of your wrath, there is no soundness in my flesh; there is no peace in my bones because of my sins, For my iniquities have overwhelmed me: they have weighed upon me like a heavy load. My sores have become stench and festering. because [sic] of my folly. A stooping and exhausted wreck, I stumbled, mourning all the day. My loins were burning with fever, for my life is a total mockery, and there is no soundness in my flesh. I was crushed and deeply afflicted; I roared with the groaning of my heart. O Lord, all my longing is known to you, and my groaning is no secret to you. My heart races, my strength has left me, and even the light of my eyes has failed me. My friends and companions approached and stood by, while my closest kinsmen kept their distance; And those who sought my life were egged on while those who wished me ill spoke lies, plotting deception all the day. But I remained as a deaf man, and heard them not; as a dumb man, and opened not my mouth, As a man who has not heard a thing, and thus has no retort upon his lips. In you, O Lord, I have placed my trust: you will give heed, O Lord, my God! I said, "Oh, that my foes cease to gloat over me who bluster mightily when my feet stumble." As for me, I am ready to be scourged, and my pain is with me always. Indeed, I myself confess my guilt, and I will live in anguish because of my sin. But my enemies survive and overpower me, and those who hate me without cause are multiplied, Those who, rendering evil for good, opposed me when I sought but justice. O Lord God, forsake me not! Stay not afar from me. Hasten to help me, O Lord of my salvation! Psalm 38 I said, "I will watch my ways so as not to sin with my tongue." I set a curb on my mouth, so long as a sinner stood before me. I was dumb and humbled myself and kept silent, even about good, Yet my distress increased: my heart burned within me. And as I reflected , [sic] it became a blazing fire. I spoke out: O Lord, let me know my end, and the number of my days, that I may see how much I fall short. O Lord, you have worn out my days, and my life is nothing before you; Nay, every living man is total vanity. Surely, man moves as a phantom; but, he is needlessly anxious: He lays up rich treasures, but knows not for whom he gathers them. And now, what is my expectation? Is it not the Lord? And the ground of my hope, does it not lie with you? Deliver me from all my sins: you have made me the target of the fool's concern. I was dumb and opened not my mouth, for you are the one who made me. Remove your scourges from me! I am spent under the weight of your hand. When you chastise man with rebukes for sin, you dissolve his life like a spider's web. Yea, every man is needlessly troubled. hear [sic] my prayer and my plea O Lord! Heed my tears! For I am a stranger before you and an exile as all my fathers were. Spare me, that I may have some respite before I leave to be no more. Psalm 39 I waited patiently for the Lord, and he paid heed to me and heard my plea, And he lifted me out of the pit of misery and out of the mire. And he set my feet on a rock and guided my steps aright; And he put a new song on my lips, a hymn to our God. May many see and fear, and put their hope in the Lord. Blessed is he whose hope is in the name of the Lord, and who has not turned to mad delusions. O Lord my God, you have multiplied your wonders, and who can be compared to you in your thoughts? I have spoken and declared: their number is beyond counting. Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my body you have restored. Whole-burnt offering and sacrifice for sin you did not require. Then I said: "Behold, I come." In the scroll of the book it is written of me That I desired to do your will, O my God, and to keep your law within my heart. I have preached justice in the great assembly: Lo! I will not restrain my lips. O Lord, you know my righteousness: I have not hidden your truth within my heart, but I proclaimed your salvation. I have not hidden from the great assembly your merciful love and truthfulness. Lord, do not withhold your compassion from me, your mercy and truth have helped me always. For evils without number have assailed me; my sins have so pssessed [sic] me that I could no longer see. They grew more dense than the hairs on my head, and my heart has failed within me. Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; draw near, O Lord, and help me. Let those who seek my life to destroy it be shamed and routed all together. Let those who wish me evil be turned back and mightily put to shame; Let those who say to me, "Haha!" soon receive dishonor as their due. O Lord, let all those who seek you exult and be rejoice in you. Let those who love your salvation say at all times, "The Lord be exalted!" Though I am a beggar and in dire need, the Lord will take good care of me. You are my helper and my defender: O my God, tarry not! Psalm 40 Blessed is the helper of the poor and the needy! The Lord will save him in time of misfortune. The Lord will help him and keep him alive, and call him blessed on the earth, and not deliver him into the hands of his foes. The Lord will relieve him on the bed of his pain; he will turn his pallet when he is ill. I said, "O Lord, have mercy on me!" Heal me for I have sinned against you. My enemies have said the worst about me: "When will he die and his name perish?" And if anyone did come and visit me, his heart spoke empty words. He stored up mischief in his heart, then went out and spread it abroad. All my enemies whispered against me; they reckoned the worst about me. They put out a sinful indictment against me: "Now that he is down, he will not rise again." Indeed even my bosom friend in whom I trusted [sic] who ate my bread, dealt craftily with me. But you, O Lord, be gracious to me; come and raise me, that I may requite them. By this I know you have favored me: that my enemy has not had the best of me. But you have upheld me because of my innocence; you have set me in your presence forever. Blessed by the Lord God of Israel for ages of ages. Amen! Amen! Psalm 41 As the hind longs for running streams, so does my soul long for you, O Lord! My soul has thirsted for God alive. When shall I come and behold God's face? My tears have been my food, both day and night while they asked me every day, "Where is your God?" I remembered all this, and poured out my soul within me. For I will reach the place of the wondrous shrine, the very house of God, Amid voices of exultation and thanksgiving, and the clamor of celebration. O my soul, why are you so sad, and why do you trouble me? Hope in God, for I will give thanks to him, the salvation of my self. O My [sic] God, my soul was troubled within me, wherefore I remembered you From the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from the small mountain. Depth calls to depth at the roar of your waterfalls; all your swells and waves have flowed over me. By day, the Lord will grant his merciful love, and he will manifest it by night. Mine is a prayer to the God of my life. I will say to God, "You are my protector. Why have you forgotten me? Why do I walk in sadness as the foe oppresses me?" It was as if my bones were breaking, when oppressors taunted me When they asked me day after day, "Where is your God?" O my soul, why are you so downcast, and why do you trouble me so? Hope in God, for I will give thanks to him, my salvation and my God. Psalm 42 Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against ungodly nations. Save me from unjust and deceitful men. Since you, O God, are my strength why then have you rejected me? And why do I go about as if in mourning while me enemy oppresses me? Send forth your light and your truth: these have led me and brought me to your holy mountain and to your tabernacle. And I will go in to the altar of God, to the God who gladdens my youth; I will give thanks to you on the harp, O God, my God! O my soul, why are you so downcast, and why do you trouble me so? Hope in God, for I will give thanks to him, my salvation and my God. Psalm 43 O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us The deed you performed in their days, in days of old. How by your hand you routed the Gentiles, then settled them. You destroyed the nations and cast them out. For they did not inherit the earth by their sword, nor did their arm assure their victory; But your right hand and your arm and the light of your presence, for you favored them. You are indeed my king and my God who ordained Jacob's victories. With you shall we down our enemies and in your name spurn those who rise against us. For I do not place my trust in my bow, nor shall my sword save me, For you have saved us from our oppressors, and put to shame those who hated us. In God, shall be our pride all day long, And in your name, we shall give thanks forever. But now, you have rejected and humbled us, and you will not go forth with our hosts; You have made us retreat before our enemies, and those who hated us have plundered us at will. You have given us up like sheep to be slaughtered, and have scattered us among the nations. You have sold your people as of no worth, and there was no end to their wailing. You have made us a mockery to our neighbors, an object of scorn and derision to those around us. You have made us a joke among the Gentiles, a laughingstock among the nations. All day long, my disgrace is before me and shame covers my face At the voice of slandered and reviler, in the presence of the enemy and avenger. All these trials have befallen us, yet we have not forgotten you, nor have we broken your covenant, Nor has our heart turned away, nor our steps strayed from your path. For you have laid us low in a place of grief, and the shadow of death has covered us. If we had forgotten the name of our God, and extended our hand to a foreign god, [sic] Would not God have found this out, since he knows the secrets of the heart? All day long, we are being slain for your sake, we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Awake, O Lord! Why do you slumber? Arise, and do not cast us away forever. Why do you turn away your face, forgetting our poverty and affliction? For our life has been ground into the dust, and we lie prone upon the earth. Arise, O Lord, help us, and redeem us for the sake of your name. Psalm 44 My heart overflows with a goodly theme, As I offer my verses to the king: my tongue is the pen of a nimble writer. You are handsomer than the sons of men; grace has poured forth from your lips. Thus God has blessed you forever. Gird your sword at your thigh, mighty one, in your splendor and beauty. Stretch your bowstrings, go forth, and prevail in the cause of truth, gentleness and justice, and may your right hand lead you to wondrous deeds. Your arrows are sharpened, mighty one! Nations shall fall under you as will the courage of the king's enemies. Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever; Your royal scepter is a scepter of justice. You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity, therefore God, your God, anointed you with the oil of gladness, above your fellow kings. Myrrh, aloe and cassia exude from your garments and from the ivory chambers. By which means, the kings' daughters have gladdened you and honored you. At your right stood the queen clothed in an embroidered mantle of gold. Listen, daughter, and behold and lend your ear, and forget your people and your father's house, Since the king has desired your beauty: indeed he is your lord. And the daughters of Tyre shall ply him with gifts, the rich among the people shall seek your favor. All glorious is the daughter of the king, clothed in gold-tasseled embroidered robes. The virgins in her train shall be brought to the king, her attendants shall be brought to you. They shall be led with gladness and rejoicing, as they enter the palace of the king. Succeeding to your fathers, sons will be born to you: these you shall make princes over all the earth. Thus I will make your name well known, from age to age, therefore shall the nations praise you to all eternity and forever. Psalm 45 God is our refuge and our strength, a help in the afflictions that weigh us down. And so, we shall not fear when the earth heaves up, and the mountains are hurled to the depths of the seas. Their waters have roared and grown turbulent, the mountains were shaken by his might. The rushing of the river delights God's city. The Most High has sanctified his tabernacle. God in its midst shall not be disturbed: God shall cover it with his presence. The nations were shaken, the kingdoms tottered; at the sound of his voice, the earth quaked. The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our helper. Come and see the works of the Lord, the wonders he has given as omens to the earth. Ending wars to the limits of the earth, he will crush the bow, shatter weapons, destroy the shields with fire. Be still, and know I am God: I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted on the earth. The Lord of Hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our helper. Psalm 46 All you nations, clap your hands, cry out to God with a shout of joy. For the Lord most high is awesome, a great king over all the earth. He has subdued peoples to us and brought nations under our feet; He has chosen us as his inheritance: the beauty of Jacob which he loved. God has risen with a loud cry, the Lord, at the sound of the trumpet. Sing psalms to our God, sing psalms! Sing psalms to our king, sing psalms! Because he is king over all the earth, sing psalms with rightful reason. God reigns over the nations, God sits on his holy throne. The princes of the people consort with the God of Abraham, For God's mighty ones on earth have been greatly exalted. Psalm 47 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised In the city of our God atop the holy mountain. To the joy of the whole earth, the city of the great king Is firmly rooted on the north face of the mountain of Sion. God is known in its [sic] strongholds when he comes to its aid, For the kings of earth were called, and they all came together. They saw, and so, they marveled; they were troubled, they were shaken; They were seized with terror, with anguish as of a woman in travail. You will break up the ships of Tharsis with a violent wind, As we have heard, so have we also seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, the city of our holy God which he founded for ever. O God, we have reflected on your loving mercy in the midst of your people. As it is with your name, O God, so it is with your praise. It reaches to the ends of the earth: your right hand is full of justice. Let mount [sic] Sion rejoice, let the towns of Judah exult because of your just decrees, O Lord. Walk around Sion and circle it, describe its towers: Measure your hearts against its strength, take note of its wall, [sic] So you may tell the next generation that such is our God throughout the ages, And until ages of ages, he will shepherd us for evermore. Psalm 48 Hear these words, all you nations; listen, all you who live in the world, Both lowly-born and free men, rich and poor alike. My mouth will speak wisdom, and the thoughts of my heart, understanding. I will lend my ear to a proverb, I will reveal my answer on the harp. Why should I fear on an evil day when crafty men shall surround me? They trust in their strength and boast of the abundance of their wealth. A brother is not redeemed: can a man redeem himself? He cannot give God a ransom for himself, nor the price of the redemption of his life, Though he work forever and live till the end and never die. Then he shall see that wise men die, the fool and the mindless shall perish together, leaving their wealth to strangers. And their tombs become their homes forever, their shelter from one age to the next, though they have given their names to their lands. And man, while honored, does not understand: he may be compared to senseless cattle and resembles them. This way of theirs is a stumbling block to them, and later, they shall delight in their speech. They are headed like sheep toward Hades; death will be their shepherd, And the upright shall have dominion over them at the coming of dawn. And the help they had in their former glory shall waste away in Hades. But God will save my soul from the grip of Hades when he ransoms me. Envy not when a man grows rich, when the wealth of his house increases: He shall take nothing of it when he dies, neither shall his glory go down with him. Though in his lifetime he was counted as blessed, and was praised for doing well for himself, He shall join the race of his fathers. Throughout the ages, he shall not see light, [sic] For man, while honored, does not understand. He is compared to senseless cattle and resembles them. Psalm 49 The God of Gods, the Lord has spoken, and has summoned the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Sion comes his full story: God our God, shall reveal himself, and not be silent. A fires shall burn in his presence, and around him shall rise a mighty storm. He shall summon the heavens above, and the earth, to the judgment of his people. Gather about him, his loyal ones who made a covenant with him by sacrifices, And the heavens shall proclaim his justice, for God is the judge. "Listen, my people, and I will speak to you, O Israel! And I will bear witness before you: I am God, your God. "I will not rebuke you for your offerings, for your whole-burnt sacrifices are before me always. I need accept no bullock from your household nor any rams from your folds, [sic] "For all the beasts of the forest are mine, the cattle on the hillsides and the oxen. I know all the birds of the sky, and the beauty of the fields is mine. "If I become hungry, I will not tell you, for mine is the world and all that is in it. Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? Offer to God the sacrifice of praise, and fulfill your vows to the Most High, And call upon me on the day of affliction, and I will deliver you, and you shall praise me." But to the sinner, God has said, "Why do you recite my statutes and mouth my covenant When you hated instruction, and cast my words behind you?" When you spotted a thief, you ran with him, and you cast your lot with adulterers. Your mouth has multiplied evil, and your tongue has embraced slander. You sat and spoke against your brother, and against your mother's son you spread malice. This you did, and I kept silent. You thought wickedly that I was like you. I will rebuke you, and set your offense before your face. Now remember this, you who forget God, Lest [sic] he seize you, and there be no one to save. The sacrifice of praise shall glorify me: thus will I show him the salvation of God. Psalm 50 Have mercy on me, O God, in the greatness of your love; In the abundance of your tender mercies, wipe out my offense. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin, For I am well aware of my iniquity, and my sin is before me always. It is you alone I have offended: I have done what is evil in your sight Wherefore you are justified in your charges and triumphant in your judgment. Behold, I was born in iniquities, and in sins my mother conceived me. But you are the lover of truth: you have shown the hidden depths of your wisdom. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be pure, cleanse me, and I shall be whiter than snow; Let me hear sounds of joy and feasting: the bones that were afflicted shall rejoice. Turn your face away from my offenses, and wipe off all my sins. A spotless heart created in me, O God! Renew a steadfast spirit in my breast. Cast me not away from your face; take not your blessed Spirit out of me; Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and let your guiding Spirit dwell in me. I will teach your ways to the sinner, and the wicked shall return to you. Deliver me from blood-guilt, O God, my saving God, and my tongue will joyfully sing your justice. O Lord, you will open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise. Had your [sic] desired sacrifice, I would have offered it, but you will not be satisfied with whole-burnt offerings. Sacrifice to God is a contrite spirit. a [sic] crushed and humbled heart God will not spurn. In your kindness, O Lord, be bountiful to Sion may the walls of Jerusalem be restored. Then will you delight in proper oblation, in sacrifice and whole-burnt offerings. Then shall they offer calves upon your altar. Psalm 51 Why do you flaunt your sin, O mighty one? All day long, your tongue has plotted iniquity. Like a sharpened blade, you have devised malice. You have loved evil more than good, lies rather than the words of truth, You have loved saying of perdition and a deceitful tongue. Therefore may God destroy you utterly; may he seize you and expel you from your house and uproot you from the land of the living. And the righteous shall see and fear, and they shall laugh at him and say, [sic] "Behold the man who did not make God his shelter, but trusted in the greatness of his wealth, and relied on his folly." But I, as a fruitful olive tree in God's house, always trusted in God's mercy from age to age. I will praise you forever for all you have done, And I will stand by your name, for it is good in the eyes of your faithful. Psalm 52 The fool said in his heart; "There is no God." They have become corrupt and indulged in lawlessness: there is not one that does good. Good looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see whether any of them would understand or search for God. All have strayed, all alike becoming depraved: not one is doing good, not even one. Will any of the sinners admit their guilt who devour my people like bread, with no regard for God? At that point, they were terrified where they was nothing to fear, for God has scattered the bones of the flatterers. They were put to shame, for God made them objects of contempt. Who will bring Israel's salvation out of Sion? When the Lord ends Israel's captivity, Jacob shall exult and Israel shall be glad. Psalm 53 O God, save me through your name, and vindicate me by your might. O God, listen to my prayer, hear the words of my mouth. For strangers have risen against me and men too strong for me have sought my life. They have not kept God before their eyes. For behold, God is helping me: the Lord is the upholder of my soul. He shall return evil upon my enemies, destroy them in his truth. Willingly will I sacrifice to you. I will praise your name, for it is good. For you have saved me from every trouble, and my eyes have looked down upon my foes. Psalm 54 O God, hear my prayer and do not spurn my plea; give heed to me and answer me. I was grieved in my innocence; I trembled at the enemy's shouts, and at the oppression of the wicked. They heaped evil upon me and seethed with anger against me. My heart recoiled within me, and the terror of death overcame me. Fear and trembling possessed me, and darkness overwhelmed me. And I said, "Who will give me wings like a dove's, that I may fly, and come to rest?" Behold, I would flee far away. and [sic] lodge in the wilderness. I would wait for my deliverer. from [sic] faintheartedness before the storm. O Lord, confound them and confuse their tongues, for I have seen lawlessness and strife in the city. Day and night, they encircle its walls. Within, there is anarchy and trouble and injustice. Usury and fraud are never absent from its public squares. Had it been a foe who insulted me, that I could have endured. Had the one who hated me stood up against me, from him I could have hidden. But you, a kindred soul, my comrade, my friend, [sic] With whom I ate in sweet companionship, and walked in harmony within God's house! May death come down upon them, may they fall into Hades alive! For evil is within their dwellings, in the very midst of them. As for me, I have appealed to God, and the Lord has heard me. At dusk, dawn and noon, I will complain and cry, and he will hear my voice. He will deliver my soul in peace from those arrayed against me, for there are many who oppose me. God the master before all ages will hear and humble them, For in them, there is no repentance, for they have not feared God. He offered his hand in atonement, but they profaned his covenant. They were scattered by the anger of his face yet his heart inclined toward them. His words were smoother than oil, and yet they are darts. Cast your care upon the Lord, and he himself will sustain you: he will never let the just be distressed. But you, O Lord, will cast them down into the pit of destruction. Men of blood and deceit shall not live half their days. As for me, I will hope in you, O Lord! Psalm 55 Have mercy on me, O God, for people have trampled me down. All day long, they have pressed their assault; my enemies have crushed me unceasingly, for many war against me. They shall be seized with fear, but I will hope in you. To God I will offer words of praise. All day long, I have hoped in the Lord: I will not fear what man could do to me. All day long, they have loathed my words; all their schemes are aimed at my ruin. They band together and lurk, watching my every step: even so, I have stayed alive. On no account will you save them: you will bring down the people in your wrath. O God, I have devoted my life to you: you have placed my tears before you, as your promised. My enemies shall be turned back on the day I will call upon you. Behold, I know you are my God. Before God's [sic] I will praise his command; before the Lord I will praise his word. I have hoped in God: I will not fear what men could do to me. Within me, O God, are the vows I will offer in praise of you. For you have delivered my soul from death and my feet from stumbling, That I should be accepted before God in the light of the living. Psalm 56 Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for my soul has trusted in you And in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge until iniquity has passed away. I will cry out to the God most high, the God who has shown be kindness. He sent from heaven and saved me, he put to shame those who trampled me. God has sent forth his mercy and his truth, and delivered my soul from the midst of lions. I lay down to sleep in spite of my troubles. As for the sons of men, their teeth are spears and arrows and their tongue is a sharp sword. Be exalted, O Lord, above the heavens; may your glory be over all the earth. They have prepared snares for my feet, they have bowed me down; They have dug a pit in my way, and fallen into it themselves. My heart is ready, O my God, my heart is ready! I will sing and pluck the harp. Awake, O my glory! Awake, harp and lyre! I will rise up at dawn. I will give thanks to you among the peoples, O Lord! I will sing of you among the Gentiles. For your mercy reaches to the heavens, and your truth, to the clouds. Be exalted, O Lord, above the heavens, and may your glory be over all the earth. Psalm 57 If you truly speak justice, you judge rightly, you sons of men. But you work iniquities in your heart on earth: your hands weave wicked plots. Sinners have gone astray since the womb, being perverted from birth, telling lies. Their venom is like that of a snake, like that of a dumb asp [sic] That stops its ears so as not to hear the voice of charmers, However skillful the enchantments prepared by the wise. God has shattered their teeth in their mouth, the Lord has smashed the fangs of the lion. May they vanish like running water; may he bend his bow until they weaken. May they be dissolved like melted wax: the fire has fallen, but they have not seen the sun. Before your briars are aware of the thorn, he shall devour you alive in his wrath. The just shall rejoice, as he sees the retribution of the wicked He shall wash his hands in the blood of the wicked. And a man shall say, "Truly, there is a reward for the just; Truly there is a God who judges them on earth." Psalm 58 Deliver me from my enemies, O God; redeem me from those who rise up against me. Rescue me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloodthirsty men. For behold, they have hunted me down; powerful men have assaulted me, Neither for any wrongdoing of mine nor for any fault in me, O Lord! In my innocence I ran a straight course. Rise up and help me, and see. And you, Lord God of Hosts, the God of Israel, give heed, punish all the Gentiles: show no mercy to those who work iniquity. May they return at dusk, like starving dogs, prowling about the city. Behold, they shall shout with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips, but who listens? But you, O Lord, will laugh them to scorn, reducing all the Gentiles to naught. My strength, I will keep faith with you, since you, O God, are my helper. As for my God, his mercy shall go before me; my God shall show me forth to my foes. Kill them not, lest they forget your law: scatter them by your power, and bring them down, O Lord, my defender! For the sin of their mouth and the word of their lips, let them be caught in their pride, And because of their cursing and lies, may their end be proclaimed. Through the wrath of utter destruction, they shall no longer exist, And they shall know that the God of Jacob is Lord of the ends of the earth. They shall return at dusk, like starving dogs, and go prowling about the city; They shall scavenge around for food. and [sic] if they are not sated, they will growl. But I will sing to your power, and in the morning, exult in your mercy, For you have been my helper and my refuge in the day of my affliction. You are my help: to you, my God, will I sing; you are my stronghold, O God, and my merciful love. Psalm 59 O God, you have rejected us and destroyed us; you had been angry, and yet took pity on us. You have shaken the earth and thrown it into confusion: repair its ruins for it is tottering. You have been hard on your people, you have made us drink a stupefying wine; You have given a sign to those who fear you, that they may escape out of bow-range. For your beloved ones to be delivered, save them with your right hand and hear me. God has spoken in his sanctuary: I will rejoice and divide Shechem. and [sic] measure out the valley of tents. Mine is Gilead, and mine is Manasse, and Ephraim is the helmet on my head. Judas is my scepter, Moab is the washbowl of my hope. On Edom I will set my sandal; the Philistines have submitted to me. Who will lead me into the walled city? Who will guide me as far as Edom? Why not you, O God, who have cast us off, and will you not, O God, go forth with our forces? Give us help out of trouble for vain is the salvation of man. In God we shall do valiantly, and he will bring to naught those who pursue us. Psalm 60 O God, hear my plea, attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth, I have cried out to you when my heart grew faint. You lifted me up on a rock, you guided me, For you became my hope, a tower of strength before the enemy. I will dwell in your tabernacle forever, I will find shelter under the shadow of your wings, For you, O Lord, have heard my prayers. You have given a share to those who dread your name. You shall add days to the life of the king, extending his years from age to age. He shall dwell forever in God's presence. Who among them will seek his mercy and his grace? Thus will I sing to your name for evermore, fulfilling my vows day by day. Psalm 61 Shall not my soul be subject to God, since from him is my salvation? For he is my God, my savior and helper, and I shall not be made to waver any more. How long will you assail a man? You are battering him like a crumbling wall, a sagging fence. Besides, they plotted to wreck my honor. I ran and thirsted. With their mouth, they blessed, but in their heart, they cursed. Yet, O my soul, be subject to God, for from him is my patient hope. For he is my God and my savior, my helper: I shall not be led astray.. [sic] In God is my salvation and my glory, the God of my help; and my hope is in God. Hope in him, all assemblies of peoples; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our help. But the sons of men are worthless, the sons of men are false. Under the yoke of wickedness, all join together out of vanity. Trust not in wrongdoing, nor long for robbery. Even if wealth flows, set not your heart upon it. God spoke out once, and I heard these two things: that power is God's, and mercy yours, O Lord! and [sic] that you will reward each one according to his works. Psalm 62 O God, my God, at dawn I rise to you. My soul has thirsted for you, and oh, how my flesh has hungered for you! Like a desolate and trackless land that has no water, so did I come before you in your holy place to see the power and the glory that are yours, Since your love is better than life itself, my lips shall declare your praise. So shall I bless you as long as I live, and lift up my hands and call upon your name. My soul shall be filled as with choicest fare, and joyful lips will praise your name. As I lay on my couch, I remembered you; I meditated on you throughout the early watches: That you became for me the helping one, that in the shelter of your wings, I find delight. My soul clings to you, and your right hand holds me up. But as for those who sought my life in vain, may they sink into the depths of the earth, [sic] And be given over to the sword. They prey of jackals shall they be. But the king shall rejoice in God, and all who swear by him shall glory, for the mouths of liars is stopped. Psalm 63 Hear my prayer, O God, as I reverently bow before you. Deliver my soul from fear of the enemy. You have sheltered me from the mob of villains From the multitude of those who work iniquity. Those who have sharpened their tongues as a sword. They have wickedly bent their bow To shoot the innocent from ambush; aiming at him suddenly and heedlessly. They persist in their evil purpose, they conspire to set their snares in secret; They have said: "Who will see them?" They have planned their wickedness. They have worn themselves out, searching and devising. A man will come forward, but the heart is deep, and God shall be exalted. Their wounds were from the arrows of foolish children, for their tongues scorned him. All those who saw them were troubled, and every man was in awe. And they told of God's works and understood his deeds. The just shall rejoice in the Lord and hope in him, and all the upright in heart shall be praised. Psalm 64 Praise becomes you, O God in Zion: [sic] and a vow shall be made to you. You shall hear my prayer: to you, all flesh shall come. The words of the wicked have overwhelmed us, but you will pardon our sins! Blessed is the one you have chosen and adopted: he shall dwell in your courts. We shall be filled with the goods of your house: your temple is holy. You are wonderful in your justice: hear us, O God our savior, The hope of all the ends of the earth and of those on the high sea. You established the mountains in your strength, being girded about with power; You stirred up the depths of the sea and the roar of its waves. The nations shall be troubled; even those established at the ends of the earth Shall be in awe of your signs. You will make the farthest East and West rejoice. You have visited the earth and sated it; you have abundantly enriched it. The river of God is filled with water; you have prepared their food, so the land is ready. Saturate its furrows, multiply its fruits: softening it with showers as they grow. You will bless the cycle of the years of your grace, and your fields shall yield abundant crops. The mountain wilderness shall flourish, and the hills shall be garlanded with joy. The rams of the flock shall be thick with fleece. and [sic] the valleys shall abound in wheat. They shall cry aloud, they shall sing hymns of praise. Psalm 65 Sing out to God, all you on earth, sing praise to his name; Give him glorious praise, declare to God, "How awesome are your works!" Because of the greatness of your power, your enemies shall lie to you. Let the whole earth worship you and praise you: let them sing to your name. Come and see God's works: he is awesome in his deeds more than the children of men [sic] He who turns the sea into dry land. that [sic] men may cross the waterways on foot. There we shall rejoice in him who in his sovereignty rules forever. His eyes keep watch upon the Gentiles: lest the rebellious exalt themselves. O you peoples, bless our God, and let the sound of his praise be heard, Who keeps me among the living and allows not my feet to stumble. For you, O Lord, have put us to the test, and tried us through fire as silver is refined. You led us into the snare, then loaded our back with afflictions. You let men tread upon our heads; we have gone through fire and water, And then you led us out into a place of delights. I will enter your house with whole-burnt offerings; I will fulfill my vows to you Which my lips framed and my mouth uttered in my pain. I will offer you whole-burnt sacrifices full of marrow, with incense and rams; I will make you an offering of oxen and goats. Come, listen: I will tell you who fear God what he has done for my soul. I cried out to him aloud, and exalted him with my voice. If I had harbored iniquity in my heart, the Lord, would not have listened [sic] But God has hearkened to me: he has heeded the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God who has not spurned my prayer, nor wrested his loving mercy away from me. Psalm 66 O God, be merciful to us, and bless us, and may your face shine upon us, So that your way may be known on earth, and your salvation among all nations. O Lord, let the peoples give thanks to you: may all the peoples give thanks to you! Let the nations rejoice and exult, for you judge the peoples with equity, and shall guide the nations of the earth. Let the peoples give thanks to you, O God, let all the peoples give thanks to you. The earth has yielded its fruit. May God, our God, bless us, and let all the ends of the earth revere him. Psalm 67 Let God arise and his enemies be scattered, and let those who hate him flee from his presence. As smoke vanishes, let them vanish. As wax melts in the presence of fire, [sic] So let the sinners perish before God, But let the just rejoice and exult before God: let them be enchanted with joy. Sing to God, sing praise to his name; make way for the Rider of the West. The Lord is his name: exult before him. They shall fear in the presence of the one who is the defender of widows: God in his holy place. God gives a home to the lonely, releasing those who are hard of heart who dwell among the tombs. O God, when you sallied before your people, when you crossed the wilderness, The earth quaked and the heavens rained down before the God of Sinai, the God of Israel. O God, you will give your inheritance a bountiful shower, For it was languishing, but you restored its strength. Your creatures dwell within it. In your kindness, you provided for the poor. The Lord God will give utterance to those who mightily proclaim the good news. He is the King of Hosts of the beloved one; And to the women adorning the house, he will grant a share of the spoils. And when you come to rest in the land that is your lot, He will give you the wings of a dove, silver-plated and its crown covered with yellow gold. When the Heavenly One scatters kings upon it, they shall become snow upon Selmon. The mountain of God is a rich mountain, a fertile mountain, a wealthy mountain. Why do you envy, you fertile mountain, the mountain on which God intends To make his dwelling place? For he will live there forever. The chariots of God were ten thousand strong, thousands in excellent shape, When the Lord came with them from Sina [sic] to the holy place. When you ascended on high, you made captivity captive. You received human tribute even from those who doubted you would stay with them. Blessed be the Lord God, blessed by the Lord from day to day, And the God of our salvation will bring us prosperity. Our God is the God of salvation, and the Lord's are the ways of foiling death. But God will crush the heads of his enemies, the hairy crowns of those who walk about in sin. The Lord said, "I will bring them back from Basan, I will bring them from the depth of the sea, So that your foot may be dipped in blood, and your dogs' tongues, have a taste of the enemies." Your passing has been observed, O God, the progress of my God, the king, to the holy place. The princes went first, before the musicians, between them maidens playing the timbrel. Praise God in the assemblies, the Lord of the fountains of Israel. There is Benjamin the younger in the lead, the princes of Juda, their rulers, the princes of Zabulon, the princes of Naphtali. O God, command that your might may strengthen what you have wrought in us. Because of your temple in Jerusalem, kings shall bring gifts to you. Rebuke the wild beasts of the swamp, the herd of bulls with the heifers of the peoples, So that those who have been proven like silver may not be shut out. Scatter the nations that seek war: ambassadors shall come from Egypt, Ethiopia shall stretch out her hand to God. Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth, sing psalms to the Lord! Sing to God who rides on the heaven of heaven, toward the rising sun. Behold, he will utter a mighty sound by means of his voice. Give glory to God, whose splendor covers Israel, whose power is in the clouds. Wonderful is God in his faithful ones, the God of Israel. He gives power and strength to his people: Blessed be God! Psalm 68 Save me, O God, for the waters threaten my life. I am mired in deep mud: there is no foothold. I have reached the bottom of the sea, and a storm has overwhelmed me. I am exhausted from calling out, my throat is parched, my eyes have failed from looking for my God. Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head. My foes, who pursue me unduly, are too strong for me. I paid a penalty for what I had not stolen. O God, you know my foolishness; and my sins are not hidden from you. Let not those who serve you, O God of Hosts, be shamed on my account, Nor those who seek you be dishonored because of me for your sake, O God of Israel! For I have suffered reproach on your account: confusion has veiled my face. I have become a stranger to my brethren, and an alien to my mother's sons. For the zeal of your house has consumed me, and the taunting of those who blaspheme you has fallen upon me. And even when I humbled myself with fasting, I was blamed for it. I made my garment out of sackcloth, and I became a byword to them. Those who sit at the gates gossiped about me, and the wine-bibbers mocked me with their songs. But I come to you, O Lord, through my prayer; it is a time to seek your favor, O God. In the abundance of your loving mercy, hear me in the security of your salvation. Save me from the mire, that I may not sink in it. Deliver me from those who hate me, and from the depth of the waters. Let not the flood-waters drown me, nor the deep swallow me. nor [sic] the pit close its mouth over me. Hear me, O Lord, for your mercy is good; In the abundance of your loving-kindness look down upon me. And do not turn your face away from your servant, for I am afflicted. Make haste, hear me. Draw near, and redeem my life; ransom me from my enemies. For you know my reproach and my shame and my humiliation: All those who afflict me stand before me. My soul expected reproach and misery, and I have waited for one to grieve with me, but there was none, And for one to comfort me, but I found no one. And they put gall in my food, and when I thirsted, they gave me vinegar to drink. Let their own table become a snare, for retribution and a scandal. Let their eyes grow dim so that they cannot see, and keep their backs hunched down forever. Pour out your anger upon them, and let the fury of your wrath seize them. Let their homes become desolate, and let no one be living in their tents. For they hounded the one you had smitten, and increased the pain of my wounds. Add iniquity to their iniquity, and let them not come into your justice. Let them be erased from the book of the living, and not be counted among the just. I am poor and suffering, but your saving presence upheld me. I will praise the name of my God with a song, I will magnify him with praise. And this will be more pleasing to God than a young bullock with horns and hoofs. Let the oppressed see and rejoice. Seek God and you shall live. For the Lord hears the needy, and does not spurn his bonded ones. Let heaven and earth praise him, the sea, and all things that move in them. For God will save Sion, and the cities of Judea shall be rebuilt, And people shall dwell within it, and inherit it. And the descendants of his servants shall own it, and those who love his name shall live in it. Psalm 69 O God, come to my aid! O Lord, hasten to help me! Shame and disgrace upon those who seek my life. Let them be turned back and be disgraced who wish me evil! Let them retreat at once in shame who jeer at me, "Well done! Well done!" But let all who seek you be glad and rejoice in you; And let those who love your salvation, O God, always say, "The Lord be exalted!" As for me, I am wretched and poor: God help me. You are indeed my help and my deliverer, O Lord, tarry not. Psalm 70 O Lord, I have hoped in you: let me not be put to shame forever. In your justice deliver me and rescue me ; [sic] incline your ear toward me and save me. Be to me a God of sheltering and a stronghold to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. O my God, deliver me from the hand of the wicked, from the hand of the lawless and unjust man. For you are my support, O Lord, O Lord, my hope from the days of my youth. I have relied on you from birth. From my mother's womb, you have sheltered me: my constant praise goes up to you. I have become as a portent to many, but you are a mighty harbor. Let my mouth be filled with your praise, that I may sing hymns to your glory and your majesty all day long. Forsake me not at the time of old age, abandon me not when my strength is spent. For my enemies have spoken against me, and those who stalk my soul have conspired. Saying, "God has forsaken him: hunt him down and seize him, for no one will save him." O God, stay not away from me. O my God, make haste to help me. Let those who threaten my life be abashed and consumed; Let those who seek to harm me be clothed with shame and dishonor. But I will hope without cease and proclaim your praise over all. My mouth will declare your justice and your salvation, all day long. Since I know nothing of the affairs of men, I will go forth in the might of the Lord; O Lord, and speak of nothing but your justice. O God, you have taught me since my youth, and to this day, I declare your wonders. And when I am old and grey, O God, forsake me not Until I have proclaimed your mighty arm to every future generation, [sic] Your lordship and your righteousness, O God, rise up to the highest heavens, The mighty works you have done: O God, who is like you? How many pains have you made me suffer, yet you relented and quickened me, And you brought me up again from the depths of the earth. You increased your justice, you turned around, and comforted me, And you brought me up again from the depth of the earth. I too, therefore, will give thanks to you, for your faithfulness, on a stringed lyre; I will sing psalms to you on the harp, O Holy One of Israel. My lips shall rejoice when I sing to you, and my soul which you have redeemed. Also, my tongue will dwell all day long on your justice, while those who wish me evil shall be shamed and confounded. Psalm 71 O God, give your sense of justice to the king and your righteousness to the king's son, That they may judge your people with equity and your needy ones with fair judgment. Let the very mountains and the hills be clothed in peace for your people, In justice, he judges the needy of the people, and safeguards the children of the poor. And he will bring down the oppressor, outlasting the sun and the moon forever. He shall come down as rain upon a fleece, and as drops falling down upon the earth. In his days, justice shall arise, and peace abound till the moon be no more. And he shall have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. The Ethiopians shall fall down before him, and his enemies shall lick the dust. The kings of Tharsis and the isles shall offer gifts, the kings of the Arabs and Saba shall bring offerings. And all the kings shall bow down before him, and all the nations serve him, For he has freed to poor from the tyrant, and the needy, for whom there was no help. He will pity the poor and the needy, and deliver the lives of the distressed. He will protect them from usury and injustice, and their name shall be precious to him. And he shall live, and receive of the gold of Arabia, And all shall pray to him without cease, and sing his praise the whole day long. May their be a settlement on earth to the very top of the mountains: May its fruit exceed that of Lebanon, and the citizen flourish like grass of the earth. Let his name be blessed forever, let his name last longer than the sun, And all the tribes of the earth shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed. Blessed is the Lord God of Israel who alone works wonders, And blessed is his glorious name forever, and all the earth shall be filled with his glory. Amen! Amen! Psalm 72 How good is God to Israel, to the upright of heart! Yet my feet almost stumbled; For I was jealous of the lawless, as I saw the sinners' peace. For there was no remorse at the time of their death, nor deserved suffering. They did not share in the pains of men nor were they stricken as others are. Therefore pride has taken hold of them, clothed as they are with their injustie and impiety. Their injustice arises from their grossness, out of the disposition of the heart. They plotted and spoke wickedly, they spoke unrightly against the Most High. They have set their mouths against heaven, and their words have spread over the earth. Therefore shall my people come back, and full days shall be found in them. And they said: "How does God know, and is there understanding in the Most High?" Behold, these are the wicked men, always prosperous and wealthy, And I said: "In vain have I kept my heart true, and washed my hands in innocence." For I was tormented all day long, and reproved every morning. If I were to speak in this way, I would betray the generation of your children. So I tried to understand, but it is too hard for me, Until I enter God's sanctuary and grasp the things of the end. Indeed, you have considered their treachery, and cast them down when they grew haughty. How desolate they have become! Suddenly, they have cease to exist, undone by their own iniquity. O Lord, like one awakening from a dream, you will despise their sight in your city, So my heart was gladdened and my mind rejoiced. But I was evil, and knew it not; I was insensitive before you. Yet, I am with you at all times: you have been holding my right hand. You have guided me with your counsel, and received me gloriously, For what do I own in heaven, and what have I sought on earth but you? My heart and my flesh have become weak, O God of my heart, but God is my portion forever. For behold, those who leave you shall perish: you have destroyed those unfaithful to you. But it is good for me to cleave to God, to put my hope in the Lord, That I may proclaim all your praises at the gates of the daughters of Sion. Psalm 73 Why, O God, have you shunned us forever? Why are you angry with the sheep of your pasture? Remember your flock which you owned from the start, which you redeemed as the staff of your inheritance, this mountain of Sion on which you dwell. Lift up your hand against their pride forever, for all the damage the enemy wrought in your holy places For those who hate you have boasted in the midst of your feast. They have raised their standards as a sign of victory, not respecting even the main entrance. As if it were a clump of trees, they hacked down its doors with axes. Then cut it down with a hatchet and with a stone chisel They burned your temple to the ground, they profaned the temple sacred to your name. They said to themselves, all their kindred together: "Come, let us abolish the feasts of the Lord from the face of the earth. "We have not seen our omens, there are no more prophets, and God will not know us any more." How long, O Lord, will the enemy revile you? Shall the enemy insult your name forever? Why do you stay your hand, your right hand from your bosom for so long? Yet God is our king throughout the ages; he has wrought salvation in the midst of the earth. In your might, you established the sea, you smashed the heads of dragons on the waters, You cracked the heads of the great serpent, and gave it as food to the Ethiopian people. You split open springs and torrents, you dried up mighty rivers. Yours is the day, and yours is the night, you set the sun and the moon in place; You fixed all the limits of the earth; you made summer and spring. Remember all this, your creation: an enemy has affronted the Lord, and a foolish people has insulted your name. Deliver not to beast a soul that is your witness; forget not the souls of the needy forever. Consider your covenant, for the dark places of the earth are filled with the dwellings of wickedness. Let not the downtrodden and afflicted be scorned: the poor and needy shall praise your name. Rise up, O God! Declare your cause. Remember the taunts of the foolish all day long. Forget not the voice of your suppliants; As for those who hate you their arrogance will rise against you without cease. Psalm 74 We will give thanks to you, O God; we will give thanks and call upon your name. I will proclaim all your wonderful deeds. At the appointed time, I will judge right. Though the earth melt away, and all its inhabitants. It is I who keep firm its pillars. I said to transgressors, "Transgress no more," and to sinners, "Do not flaunt your strength; Do not lift up your horn on high, speak not offense against God." For he comes neither from East nor West, nor from mountain wilderness, For God is the judge: he puts one down, and lifts up another. For there is a cup in the hand of the Lord, A full draft of untainted wine, And he has tilted it from side to side, yet it is never emptied to the dregs: all the sinners of the world shall drink. As for me, I will exult forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob, And will break all the horns of sinners, but the horns of the just shall be lifted up. Psalm 75 God is known in Judea; in Israel, great is his name. And his abode is a place of peace, and Sion is his home. There, he destroyed the power of the bow, the shield and the sword and instruments of war. You shine forth wondrously from the eternal mountains. All the foolish-hearted were confounded. All the wealthy men slept their sleep, but were found empty-handed. At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, the horsemen lay stunned. You are terrifying, and who will stand against you in your wrath? Out of heaven, you have made judgment heard; the earth feared and fell silent When God arose in judgment to save all the meek of heart. For man's inner thought shall bear witness to you; and his meditation shall be a feast to you. Make vows to the Lord our God and fulfill them. Let all around him bring gifts [sic] To him who is to be feared, and takes away the breath of princes; To him who is fearsome among the kings of the earth. Psalm 76 I cried out aloud to the Lord, aloud to God, and he heard me. On the day of my affliction, I sought the Lord, at night, with my hands uplifted to him, and I was not disappointed. My soul had refused to be comforted, then I remembered God, and I was cheered; I meditated on him and my spirit grew faint. All my enemies spied on me: I was troubled, and could not speak. I considered the days of old, and remembered years long past, and wondered. By night, I communed with my heart, and carefully searched my spirit. Will the Lord reject me forever, and will he no longer show me favor? Will he cut off his mercy forever, from generation to generation? Will God forget to be gracious or withhold his mercies in his wrath? And I said, "Now I have begun to see: this is a change in the Most High's right hand." I remembered the deeds of the Lord, for I will recall your wonders of old. And I will meditate on all your works, and think about your doings. O God, yours is the way of holiness. Which God is as great as our God? You are the God who work [sic] wonders: you have revealed your power among the nations. By your arm, you have redeemed your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and shuddered, and the very depths were troubled. Great was the sound of waters; the clouds gave forth a cry, for your arrows pass through them. The roar of your thunder was in the whirlwind and your lightning lit up the world. The earth trembled and quaked. Your way is in the sea, and your paths in deep waters. yet [sic] your footsteps cannot be seen. You guided your people as sheep under the hand of Moses and Aaron. Psalm 77 O my people, give heed to my law, lend your ear to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in parables, I will speak mysteries from of old, [sic] All that we have heard and known, and our fathers have described to us. They were not hidden to their children until the second generation, [sic] As they announced the praises of the Lord, and his mighty deeds, and the wonders he performed; And in Jacob, he raised up a witness, and established a law in Israel, [sic] Which he bade our fathers make known to their sons, so the next generation would be aware, Even the sons yet to be born, and they should rise, and tell them to their children, [sic] That they may place their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but eagerly seek his commands, Lest they be like their fathers, a perverse and disobedient generation. A generation which set not its heart aright, nor its spirit upon God. The sons of Ephraim, bowmen and marksmen, retreated on the day of battle. They did not keep God's covenant, nor would they walk in his law. And they forgot the favors and wonders he had shown them, [sic] The miracles he had wrought before their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the plain of Tanes. He divided the sea and led them through, he held back the waters as in a wineskin. And by day, he guided them with a cloud, and the whole night long, with a glowing fire. He split a rock in the wilderness and gave them to drink as from a deep pool. He made water gush out of the rock, and made waters flow like rivers. Yet they sinned still more against him, they provoked the Most High in the desert. And they tempted God in their hearts, by demanding food for their craving. And they spoke against God and said, "Cannot God prepare a table in the desert [sic] "Since he struck the rock, and waters flowed in abundant torrents? Can he not also also [sic] provide bread, or prepare a table for his people?" Therefore the Lord heard, and was taken aback, and fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger blazed up against Israel, Because they had no faith in God, nor did they trust in his deliverance. Yet he commanded the clouds from above, and opened the gates of heaven, And showered them with manna to eat, and gave them the bread of heaven. Mortals ate the bread of angels: he sent them food in abundance. He removed the south wind from heaven, and stirred up the southwest wind by his power. And he rained upon them meat like dust, and feathered birds like the sands of the seas, and [sic] they fell in the midst of their camp, all around their tents. And they ate and were fully sated, and he satisfied their craving. Still, they did not stop their complaining, even as their food was still in their mouth. The wrath of God rose up against them, and slew the stoutest among them, and toppled the princes of Israel. In spite of all this, they sinned, and refused to believe in his wonders. And their days were consumed in vanity, and their years in trouble. But when he slew them, they sought him, and repented and called upon God. And they remembered God was their helper, and that God the Most High was their savior. And they professed love for him with their mouth, but lied to him with their tongue. For their heart was not set upon him, neither were they true to his covenant. But he is compassionate, and will forgive their sins, and not destroy them. And often, he will turn away his wrath, and not let his anger burn in full, For he remembered they are but flesh, a passing breath that does not return. How often they angered him in the desert, and provoked him in the parched land! For they turned around and tempted God, and tested the Holy One of Israel. They remembered not his hand, nor the day he saved them from the tyrant's grip; How he wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Tanes; How he turned their rivers into blood, and made their streams undrinkable. He sent against them the dog-fly, and it devoured them, and the frog that devastated them. And he gave their fruit to the worm, and their harvest to the locust. He killed their vines with hail, and their mulberry trees with frost. And he gave up their cattle to hail, and their possessions to fire. He loosed against them the fury of his wrath, of his passion, his anger and distress, a mission of angels of evil. He made a path for his anger, he spared not their souls from death, but surrounded their cattle with death. And he smote every first-born in the land of Egypt, the flower of their manhood in the tents of Cham. And he led his people away like sheep; he guided them as a flock in the desert; But he guided them with hope, so that they feared not, and the sea overwhelmed their enemies. And he led them to his holy mountain, this mountain his right hand had won. And he drove the Gentiles away from them, and allotted them portions of inheritance, and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents. Yet, they tempted and provoked God Most High, and observed not his commandments. And they turned away and were faithless as their fathers had been. They changed their aim like a twisted bow, and provoked him with their hill-shrines, And moved him to jealousy with their graven images. God heard them, and looked down upon them, and utterly rejected Israel. And he forsook the tabernacle of Selom, his tent where he lived among men. And he surrendered their power to captivity, and their women to the hands of the enemy. And he gave his people to the sword, and shunned his inheritance. Fire devoured their young men, and their virgins sang no lament. Their priests fell under the sword, and their widows shall not be wept over. So the Lord woke up, as out of sleep, as a mighty man drunken with wine; And he put his enemies to rout; he brought down on them everlasting scorn. And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph, and selected not the tribe of Ephraim, But he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Sion which he loved. And he built his sanctuary like that of unicorns, he set it up on earth forever. And he chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfold. He took him from tending pregnant ewes, to shepherd Jacob his people and Israel his inheritance. And he tended them in the innocence of his heart, and guided them by the skill of his hands. Psalm 78 O God, the Gentiles have come into your inheritance. They have polluted your holy temple, they have made Jerusalem a storehouse. They have offered the corpses of your servants as food for the birds of the sky, And the flesh of your faithful ones, for the wild beasts of the earth. They have shed their blood like water throughout Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them. We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and mockery to those around us. How long, O Lord, will you be angry? Forever? Shall your jealousy burn like fire? Pour down your wrath on the Gentiles who ignored you, and on the kingdom that failed to call upon your name. For they have devoured Jacob, and laid his place to waste. Remember not our past transgressions. Let your tender mercies come hastily to us, for we have been brought very low. Help us, O God our savior, for the glory of your name. O Lord, deliver us and be merciful to our sins for your name's sake, Lest they should say among the Gentiles, "Where is their God?" And let the Gentiles witness before our very eyes That the blood your servants have shed has been avenged in full. Let the groanings of the prisoners reach you; preserve the children of the slain by your mighty arm. Repay to our neighbors sevenfold in their bosom the reproaches they have hurled against you, O Lord! For we are your people and the sheep of your pasture: we will render you thanks for evermore; From generation to generation we will declare your praise. Psalm 79 Give heed, O Shepherd of Israel who guide Joseph like a flock of sheep. Enthroned upon the Cherubim, make yourself known. Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasse, stir up your power, and come and save us. Restore us, O God, let your face shine upon us, and we shall be saved. O Lord God of Hosts, how long will you be angry with your servant's prayer? You feed us with the bread of weeping, and give us abundant tears to drink. You have made us the scorn of our neighbors, and our enemies have made fun of us. Restore us, O Lord God of Hosts, let your face shine and we shall be saved. You have transplanted a vine out of Egypt; you have cast out the Gentiles and planted it. You cleared the ground for it, and rooted it, and it filled the land. Its shade covered the mountain, and its shoots, the cedars of God. It sent out its branches to the sea, and its tendrils to the river. Why have you torn down its fence, so that all passers-by strip it clean? The boar out of the wood has trampled it, and the wild beast has grazed on it. O God of Hosts, relent, we pray: Look down from heaven and see, and visit this vine, Restoring what your right hand has planted and the son of man you yourself had strengthened. Burnt with fire and rooted out, they shall perish before you at your rebuke. Let your hand rest on the man of your right hand, the man you had strengthened to serve you, [sic] And we will not stray away from you: you will quicken us, and we will call upon your name. Restore us, O Lord God of Hosts, Make your face shine upon us and we shall be saved. Psalm 80 Rejoice in God our helper, sing out to the God of Jacob. Choose a psalm and take hold of a timbrel, a tuneful lute and a harp. Sound the trumpet to the new moon, on the auspicious day of your feast. For this is a command for Israel, and a decree of the God of Jacob. He made it a testimony in Joseph when he came out of the land of Egypt: he heard a language he did not understand. He lifted the burden from his back, his hands were freed from the builder's basket. "You called upon me in your distress and I delivered you; I heard you unseen in the tempest; I tested you in the water of strife. "Hear, my people, and I will speak to you, O Israel, and I will bear witness to you. If you listen to me, there shall be no new god with you, neither shall you worship an alien deity. "For I am the Lord your God who led you out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. "But my people did not listen to my voice, and Israel gave no heed to me, So I let them follow the ways of their heart: they will follow their own devices. "If my people had listened to me, if Israel had walked in my ways, I would have humbled their enemies in haste, and laid my hand upon those who afflicted them." The Lord's enemies lied to him, but their fate shall be everlasting. And he fed them with fat from the fire, and sated them with honey from the rock. Psalm 81 God has attended the court of the gods, and in their midst, he judges gods. How long will you judge unjustly, and be partial to the wicked? Defend the orphan and the needy, do justice to the lowly and the wretched, Rescue the needy and deliver the poor out of the hands of sinners. They neither know nor understand, but walk in darkness: the foundations of the earth shall be shaken. I said: "You are gods and sons of the Most High, all of you." Yet, as mortals you will die, and fall like any prince. Arise, O God, and judge the earth, for you shall inherit all the nations. Psalm 82 O God, who shall be compared to you? Do not be silent, nor be still O God! For behold, your enemies are in full cry, and those who hate you have raised their head. Against your people, they have plotted craftily, and conspired against your holy ones. They said, "Behold let us come, and destroy them utterly as a nation, and let the name of Israel be remembered no more." For they have convened with one accord, they have made an alliance against you. The tents of the Idumeans and the Ishmaelites [sic] Moab and the Agarenes; Gebal and Ammon and Amalec, the Philistines also with the inhabitants of Tyre. Yea, even Assur threw in with them: they have lent aid to the children of Lot. Deal with them as you did with Madian and Sisera, and Jabin at the wadi of Kison. They were utterly destroyed at Aendor, they became as dung for the earth. Make their princes like Oreb, Zeb, Zebee and Salmana, all their princes, who said: "Let us seize the altar of God as our right." O my God, make them a tumbleweed, a reed in the face of the wind: As a fire that will consume wood as a flame that sets the mountains ablaze. So will you harass them with your tempest, and terrify them in your wrath. Darken their face with shame, until they seek your name, O Lord. Let them be disgraced and dismayed forever; let them be confounded and perish, that they may know your name is Lord, that you alone are most high over all the earth. Psalm 83 How lovely your dwelling, O Lord of Hosts: My soul yearns and pines for the Lord's courtyards. Body and soul I cried out for joy toward God alive. For the sparrow has found itself a home, and the dove a nest to cradle her young: Your altars, O Lord of Hosts, my king and my God! Blessed are those who live in your house: they will praise you for ever and ever. Blessed is the man whose help is in you: his heart's desire is to ascend the valley of weeping, to the place he has chosen. For the lawgiver will impart blessings: they shall go from strength to strength and the God of gods shall be seen in Sion. Listen to my prayer, O Lord, God of Hosts; O God of Jacob, lend your ear! O God our shield, behold and look upon the face of your anointed, For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be laid low in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the Lord loves kindness and truth: God will bestow grace and glory. The Lord will not deny good things to those who walk in innocence. O Lord of Hosts, blessed is the man who hopes in you! Psalm 84 O Lord, you have favored your land, you have returned the captives of Jacob, You have remitted the sins of your people, you have covered up all their offenses. You have let all your anger subside, you have turned from your seething wrath. Restore us, O God of our salvation, and turn your wrath away from us. Will you be angry with us forever: will you stretch out your wrath from age to age? O God, you will relent and quicken us, that your people may rejoice in you. O Lord, show us your loving kindness and grant us your salvation. I will hear what the Lord God says within me, for he will speak peace to his people and to his faithful ones and to those who turn their hearts to him. Now his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land. Kindness and truth are met together, peace and justice have embraced. Truth has sprung out of the earth, justice has bowed down from heaven, For the Lord will provide what is good and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall walk before him and guide his footsteps on the way. Psalm 85 Lend your ear, O Lord, and hear me, for I am distressed and in need. Guard my life, for I am faithful. O My [sic] God, save your servant whose hope is in you! Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I will cry out to you all the day. Comfort the soul of your servant, for I have lifted up my soul to you. You are generous and gentle, O Lord, full of loving kindness for those who pray to you. O Lord, listen to my prayer, be attentive to the voice of my plea. On the day of my affliction, I called out to you, and you heard me. Of all the gods, there is not one like you, nor is there any work to match what you do. All the nations come up and worship you and give glory to your name, O Lord, For you are great, and a worker of wonders: you are the only great God. Lead me along your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth. Let my heart rejoice out of reverence for your name. I will confess you with all my heart, O Lord my God, And I will give glory to your name for evermore. For great is your kindness to me, O Lord, and you have saved my soul from the depth of Hades. Wicked men have risen against me, O God, and a band of strong men have sought my life and they had no regard for you. But you, O Lord my God, are compassionate and kind, slow to anger and full of tenderness and truth. Look upon me and have mercy on me: give your strength to your servant, and save the son of your handmaid. Give me a token of your favor, and those who hate me shall behold and cringe. For you, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me. Psalm 86 His foundations are on the holy mountain. The Lord loves the gates of Sion above all the tabernacles of Jacob. Glorious things have been spoken of you, O city of God! I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to those who know me. Behold also the Philistines of Tyre, and the Ethiopian people who were born there. A man will say, "Sion is my mother," a man who was born of her, And the Highest One himself is the one who founded her. The Lord shall tell this through the writings of the people, And of those princes who were born in her. Living in you is like a joy for all. Psalm 87 O Lord, God of my salvation, day and night I cried out before you. Let my prayer reach up to you, lend your ear to my plea, O Lord. For my soul was filled with trouble, and my life came close to Hades. I was reckoned with those who go down to the pit; I was like a man beyond help, left for dead. Like the slain left to lie in the grave, those you remember no more: for they are cut away from your hand. You have cast me down to the deepest abyss, into darkness and the shadow of death. Your anger was a burden upon me, you poured your billows over me. You took my friends away from me, you made me loathsome to them. I was closed in and could not escape, my eyes grew dim with distress. I cried out to you, O Lord, all the day, I stretched out my hands to you. But will you work wonders for the dead? Or can physicians raise them up to sing your praise? Does anyone sing your love in the grace, or your truthfulness in the midst of perdition? Are your marvels ever known in darkness or your justice in the land of obliviion? And yet, O Lord, I cried out to you, and to you my prayer shall rise at dawn. Why, O Lord, do you reject my prayer? Why do you hide your face away from me? I am wretched and troubled since my youth; I was raised high, then humbled and distressed. Your plagues have swept over me and your terrors have left me shaken. They surround me like waters all the day; they close in upon me from all sides. You have distanced from me friend and neighbor, and my acquaintances, so wretched am I. Psalm 88 O Lord, I will sing of your mercies forever; I will declare your truth with my mouth to all generations. For you said, "Mercy shall be established forever." Your truth shall be confirmed in the heavens. "I made a covenant with my chosen ones, I made an oath to David my servant: I will preserve your posterity forever, and build up your throne from age to age." O Lord, the heavens shall declare your wonders, and your truth in the assembly of the holy. For who in the clouds shall equal the Lord, and who among the sons of God can be likened to the Lord? God is awesome in the council of the saints; great and terrible above all who surround him. Lord God of hosts, who is like you? You are mighty, O Lord, and your truth surrounds you. You command the powers of the sea, and calm the tumult of its waves; You have brought down the proud as one slain, and scattered the enemies with the arm of your might. Yours are the heavens and yours the earth: you have founded the world and the fullness of it. You have created the north and the sea: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in your name. Yours in the arm with all its powers; let your hand be firmed and your right hand praised. Justice and judgment form the base of your throne, mercy and truth shall herald your coming. Blessed the people who know how to sing: O Lord, they shall walk in the light of your face. And rejoice all day long in your name, and be exalted in your justice. For you are the boast of their strength, and our horn shall be raised as you please. For our help is from the Lord from the holy one of Israel, our king. Once you spoke in a vision to your children and said: "I have given my support to a mighty one; I have raised a chosen one from among my people, I have found David, my servant. "With my holy oil, I have anointed him, for my hand shall sustain him and my arm support him. The enemy shall not prevail against him, and the son of iniquity shall do him no harm. "And I will cut down his foes before him, and put to flight those who hate him. For my truth and my mercy are with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. "And I will set his hand over the sea, and his right hand upon the river. He shall call upon me and say: 'You are my father and my God, and the pledge of my deliverance.' "And I will set him up as my first-born, higher than the kings of the earth. I will preserve my mercy for him forever, and my covenant with him shall be firm. "And I will establish his line for ever and ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. If his children should forsake my law, and fail to walk in my judgments, [sic] "If they should profane my ordinances and not keep my commandments, I will visit their transgressions with a rod and their sins with scourges. "Yet I will not remove all my mercy from him, nor will I be false to my pledge; Neither will I profane my covenant, nor go back on the words that came from my lips. "Once for all did I swear by my holiness that I would not be false to David: His posterity shall endure forever and his throne, like the sun before me. "And like the moon which is settled forever a faithful witness in heaven." Yet you have cast off and reduced to nought, [sic] and rejected your anointed one. You have torn up your servant's deed, you have ground his sanctuary into the earth. You have breached all his walls. and [sic] ruined all his strongholds. All passers-by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors. You have raised his enemies' right hand, [sic] and elated all his foes. You have turned back the help of his sword, and not come to his aid in battle. You have weakened the rite of his cleansing, and hurled his throne down to the ground. You have shortened the days of his reign, you have covered him with shame. How long, O Lord will you turn away? Forever? Shall your anger flare up like fire? Remember who I really am: lest you created all the sons of men in vain. What man is there who shall live and not see death? Shall anyone save his soul from the grip of Hades? O Lord, where are your ancient favors which you promised to David in your truthfulness? Remember, O Lord, the insults to your servant which I have borne in my bosom from the Gentiles; By which your enemies, O Lord, have blackened and reviled the compact with your anointed one. Blessed by the Lord forever. Amen! Amen! Psalm 89 O Lord, you have been for us a refuge forever. Before the mountains came to be, Before the earth and the world were formed, from all eternity to all eternity, you are. Let not man return to wretchedness, saying, "Turn back, you sons of men!" For a thousand years in your sight are but a yesterday long past, as a watch of the night. Years shall be of no account to them: the morning passes away as tender grass at dawn, it blooms and fade, [sic] at dusk, it droops and wilts and withers. For we are consumed by your anger, and have been shaken by your wrath, You have laid bare our sins before you; our life, under the light of your countenance. For all our days are wasted, and we have passed away in your wrath. Our years are as fragile as a spider's web. The sum of our days is seventy years, [sic] Eighty perhaps if we are strong, and most of them toil and sorrow. For when weakness overtakes us we are chastised. Who knows the power of your anger? By the fear of you, your wrath is to be measured. Thus make known your right hand to us, that our hearts may be trained in wisdom. Relent, O Lord! How long will you delay? Be mindful of those who serve you. In the morning, we were filled with your love, we rejoiced and were glad in all our days. Repay us in joy for the times you humbled us, the many years calamity was our lot. Let your work be manifest to your servants, and your glory to their children. And may the brightness of the Lord our God shine upon us, may he prosper the works of our hands! Psalm 90 The one who dwells in the shelter of the Most High abides in the shadow of the God of Heaven. He will say to the Lord, "My wall, my refuge, my God in whom I will trust." He it is who will save you from the hunter's snare, and from the deadly pestilence. With his pinions, he will overshadow you, and beneath his wings, you shall rest secure. As a shield, his truthfulness shall cover you: you shall not fear the terror of the night, nor that arrow that flies by day, Nor the thing that lurks about in darkness, nor the pestilence and the demon of the noon. Though a thousand should fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right, no harm will come to you. But you with your eyes shall observe, and see the retribution of the wicked. Because you have said, "O Lord, you are my hope," and have made the Most High your refuge, No evil shall come close to you, nor shall any scourge approach your dwelling. For he will command the angels to watch over all your ways. In their hands, they will carry you lest you stumble with your foot against a stone. Upon the asp and the viper you shall tread; the lion and the serpent you shall trample. "Because he hoped in me, I will save him; I will protect him, for he knew my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I am with him at the time of distress; I will deliver him and give him glory. I will fill him with length of days, and my salvation I will let him see." Psalm 91 It is good to give thanks to the Lord; and to sing psalms to your name, O Most High! To proclaim your mercy at dawn and your truth by night, on a ten-string lute with a tune on the harp. For you, O Lord, have pleased me with your deeds, and I will rejoice in the works of your hands, How greatly have your works been praised, O Lord! Your thoughts have reached great depths. This will a foolish man not know, nor a senseless man understand: That though sinners spring up like grass, and all evildoers thrive, it will only be for their eternal destruction. You, O Lord, are the eternal Most High, for behold, your enemies shall perish, and all sinners shall be scattered. But my horn shall be exalted like that of the unicorn, and my old age shall be favored with abundant mercy. For my eyes have seen my enemies, and my ears heard the wicked rising up against me. The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, he shall grow like the cedar of Lebanon. Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. Then shall they grow to a ripe old age, and they shall live in prosperity. So that they may declare that the Lord my God is fair, and there is no injustice in him. Psalm 92 The Lord reigns: he has clothed himself with majesty [sic] the Lord has robed and girded himself with strength. For he has made firm the world, and it shall not be moved. Your throne has been established of old, you are from everlasting. The rivers have lifted up, O Lord, the rivers have lifted up their voices, the voices of many waters. The waves of the sea are wonderful; the Lord is wonderful in high places. Your revelations are utterly secure: holiness befits your house, O Lord, forever. Psalm 93 The Lord is a God of retribution: the God of retribution has declared himself; Rise up, O judge of the earth: Render to the proud their due. How long shall the wicked, O Lord, how long shall the wicked gloat? They will speak, and utter lawlessness, all the evildoers shall speak up. They have afflicted your people, O Lord, and wronged your inheritance. They have killed the widow and the orphan, and murdered the stranger. And they said, "The Lord will not see, nor will the God of Jacob understand." Come to your senses, you fools, at last, be wise. The one who shaped the ear, does he not hear? The one who formed the eye, does he not see? The one who instructs the Gentiles, shall he not chastise, he the teacher of knowledge? The Lord knows the thoughts of men, that they are vain, Blessed [sic] the man you will instruct O Lord, the one you will teach from your law, Giving him respite from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the sinful one. For the Lord will not abandon his people, nor will he forsake his inheritance, Until justice returns as the base of judgment, and all the upright of heart follow it. Who will rise up for me against sinners or stand up for me against evildoers? If the Lord had not come to my help, my soul might almost have lived in Hades. If I said, "My foot is slipping!" Your mercy, O Lord, would steady me. O Lord, in the depth of my heart's many pains your consolations have calmed my spirit. Can you be bound to the throne of iniquity when it creates burdens under the guise of law? They will hunt down the soul of the just, and condemn innocent blood. But the Lord became my shelter, and God, the support of my hope. And he will repay their iniquity and their villainy; the Lord our God shall destroy them utterly. Psalm 94 Come, let us rejoice in the Lord, let us sing joyfully to God our savior. Let us come gratefully before him and praise him with psalms. For God is a great Lord and a great King above all the gods, For the Lord will not forsake his people, since the far reaches of the earth are in his hands, and the mountaintops are his own. And his is the sea, for he fashioned it, and the dry land which his hands have made. Come, let us worship and fall down before him, and weep before the Lord who made us. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep under his hand. Today, if you hear the sound of his voice, do not harden your hearts, [sic] As in the rebellion, on the day of the revolt in the desert, Where your fathers tempted me, tested me and saw my works. Forty years was I grieved by this generation, and I said, "They always err in their heart." And they have not known my ways, so I swore in my anger, "They shall not enter into my repose." Psalm 95 Sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless his name; proclaim his salvation from day to day. Publish his glory among the Gentiles, his wonderful works among all the peoples. For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised; he is awesome above all gods. For all the gods of the Gentiles are but idols, but it is the Lord who made the heavens. Thanksgiving and beauty stand before him, holiness and majesty are in his shrine. You Gentile families, bring to the Lord glory and honor, bring to the Lord glory due his name. Bring offerings, and enter his courts, worship the Lord in the courts of his holiness. Let all the earth tremble before him. Say among the Gentiles, "The Lord reigns," [sic] For he settled the world so it would not be shaken; he judges the people with justice. Let the heavens rejoice and the earth exult; let the sea resound, and all its creatures. Let the plains exult and all that is in them [sic] Then shall the trees of the forest be glad in the presence of the Lord, For he comes to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness and the people with his truth. Psalm 96 The Lord reigns! Let the earth exult, let the many islands rejoice. Cloud and darkness are around him; justice and judgment form the base of his throne. Fire shall go before him and burn up his enemies all around. His bolts of lightning have lit up the world: the earth saw and trembled. The mountains melted like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of the whole earth. The heavens have declared his justice, and all the people have seen his glory. Let all worshipers of graven images be shamed, who boast of their idols: worship him, all you his angels. Sion heard and rejoiced, and the daughters of Judea exulted because of your statutes, O Lord. For you are the Lord most high over all the earth; you are greatly exalted over all the gods. O you who love the Lord, detest evil. The Lord preserves the souls of his holy ones. He shall deliver them from the hand of sinners. Light has dawned on the just, and gladness on the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous ones, and give thanks at the thought of his holiness. Psalm 97 Sing to the Lord a new song, for the Lord has worked wonders, His right hand and his holy arm have won victory for him. The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his justice before the Gentiles. He has remembered his mercy to Jacob, and his truthfulness to the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen our God's salvation. Cry out to God, all you earth, shout and exult and sing psalms. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the music of psalms, [sic] With hammered trumpet and the blare of horn, make a joyful noise before the King and Lord. Let the sea be moved, and all it contains. the [sic] universe and all who dwell in it. The rivers shall clap their hands as one [sic] the mountains shall rejoice. For he has come to judge the earth in righteousness and the nations in justice. Psalm 98 The Lord reigns: let the Gentiles rage. He is enthroned upon the cherubim: let the earth quake. The Lord is great in Sion; he is high above all the peoples. Let them give thanks to your great name, for it is awesome and holy, and the king's honor loves just judgment. It is you who offered good will, you who wrought justice and judgment in Jacob. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool, for he is holy. Moses and Aaron are among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his name. They called upon the Lord, and he heard them. He spoke to them in a pillar of cloud; they kept his words and the laws he gave them. O Lord our God, you did hear them; O God, you were forgiving toward them, while repaying them for all their misdeeds. Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy. Psalm 99 Cry out joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; come into his presence with joyful song [sic] Serve the Lord with gladness. Know that the Lord is God: He made us, we did not make ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgivings, and his courts with hymns. Give thanks to him, praise his name, for the Lord is good, And his mercy endures forever, and his truthfulness, from generation to generation. Psalm 100 To you, O Lord, I will sing of love and judgment. I will praise you and walk a blameless path. Oh, when will you come to me? I have walked with innocence of heart in the midst of my household. I have not set before my eyes any unlawful thing; I detest those who commit evil deeds. No perverse heart has been my companion: the wicked man turned away from me, I knew him not. Whoever slandered his neighbor in secret, him I drove away. With a man of haughty airs and greedy heart, I would not share a meal. My eyes are upon the faithful of the land so that they may dwell with me. The man who walked a blameless path, he has attended me. The man who practiced haughtiness found no lodging in my house. The many who spoke unjustly did not remain in my sight. Early in the morning, I slew all the wicked of the land, Rooting out of the city of God all the workers of iniquity. Psalm 101 O Lord, hear my prayer and let my cry come to you. Turn not your face away from me; on the day of my affliction, incline your ear to me; on the day I will call on you, hear me without delay. For my days have vanished like smoke, and my bones have been parched like dry wood. I am cut down like grass and my heart is withered, I have even forgotten to eat my bread. So much have I cried and groaned that my bones have cleaved to my flesh. I resemble the vulture of the wilderness, I have become like the owl amid the ruins. Unable to sleep, I keep watch, like a lonely sparrow on the rooftop. All day long, my enemies have taunted me; even my admirers have sworn against me. For I have eaten ashes as if they were bread, and mingled my drink with tears, Because of your fury and wrath, for you raised me up, only to dash me down. My days are like an lengthening shadow, and I am withered like grass. But you, O Lord, endure forever, and your memory is from age to age. You shall arise and have mercy upon Sion, for the time to pity her, the right time has come; For your servants cherish her stones, even her dust moves them to pity. And the Gentiles shall fear your name, O Lord, and all the kings, your glory. For the Lord shall build up Sion, and he shall be seen in his glory. He has regarded the prayer of the lowly, and has not despised their plea. Let this be noted for future generations, so that a people yet to come shall praise the Lord, [sic] He has looked from the height of his holy temple, from heaven the Lord has surveyed the earth To hear the groaning of those in chains, to free the sons of the slain, To proclaim the name of the Lord in Sion. and [sic] his praise in Jerusalem When the people are gathered together with the kings for the service of the Lord. He said to him at the peak of his power "Tell me, how few are my days; Take me not away in the midst of my days, you whose years span generations." In the beginning, O Lord, you founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They shall pass away, but you remain; they shall all wear out as a garment. And you will roll them up like a cloak, and they shall be changed; But you are the same, and your years shall have no end. The sons of your servants shall dwell secure and their line shall prosper forever. Psalm 102 Bless the Lord, O my soul! May all that is in me bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all the gifts from him, [sic] Who pardons all your sins and heals all your infirmities; Who ransoms your life from corruption and crowns you with his love and mercies; Who fills your longing with what is good, and your youth is renewed like the eagle's. The Lord performs deeds of kindness, and vindication for all the oppressed. He has made known his ways to Moses, and his will to Israel's children. The Lord is the one of compassion and mercy, long-suffering and manifold love. His contention is not forever, nor will his anger always last [sic] He has not dealt with us as our sins demand, nor does he repay our evil deeds. For as high as the heavens stand over the earth, so far has the Lord extended his love for those who fear him. As far as the East is from the West, so far has he removed our sins from us. As kind as a father is to his children, so is the Lord to those who fear him. For he knows well how we were formed: remember, we are only made of dust. A man! His days resemble grass: as a flower of the field, so shall he bloom, But let a breeze pass over him and he is gone, and never shall he know his place again. But the love of the Lord is from all eternity and to all eternity for those who fear him. And his justice is upon the children of children of those who keep his covenant and remember his laws to obey them. The Lord has established his throne in heaven. Over all things his kingship is supreme. Bless the Lord, all you his angels, you strong and mighty ones who obey his word on hearing the sound of his decree. Bless the Lord, all you his powers, his attendants who obey his will. Bless the Lord, all you his works, in every place of his dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul! Psalm 103 Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, my God, you are great indeed! Clothed in pomp and brilliance, arrayed with light as with a cloak, [sic] Stretching out the sky as a tent-cloth, establishing your lofty halls on water. You make the clouds your conveyance, you surge on the wings of the wind. You make the winds your messengers, and flaming fires your attendants. You settled the earth on its foundation: it shall stand unmoved from age to age. The abyss covered it like a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. At your rebuke, they take to flight, at the peal of your thunder, they flee. They hurdle the hills and run down the dales to the place you have chosen for them. You have set up a boundary not to be passed: They shall never return to cover the earth. Down in the gullies, you make springs to rise; waters shall flow between the mountains. They shall give drink to the beasts of the field; wild asses will seek them to quench their thirst. The birds of the sky shall abide by them; from among the rocks, they will raise their song. From your lofty halls, you refresh the hills; the earth shall be fed with the fruit of your works. You make green pastures for the cattle and food-plants for the service of man, So that bread may be drawn from the earth, and wine that gladdens the heart of man; So that oil may put a gleam upon his face, and that bread may strengthen the heart of man. The trees of the plain shall be satisfied, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. Sparrows shall build their nests in them, herons shall call them their home. To the deer belong the high mountains; to rodents, the shelter of the rock. You have made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows the time of its setting. You establish darkness, and it is night wherein the forest creatures prowl. Young lions roar for their prey, and call out to God for their meat. As the sun rises, they will come together, and lay themselves down in their dens. Man will go out to his labor, and work until eventide. How great are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you have wrought them all. The earth is filled with your creatures, even the wide and open sea. Within it are countless creeping things, living beings small and large. Upon it, there are ships a-sailing, and the great beast you made to have fun. All of them look upon you to give them their food in due season. You provide, and they gather up; you open your hands, and they are full. You hide your face, and they cringe; you suspend their breath, and they die and return to their dust. You send forth your breath, and they live; you renew the face of the earth. May the Lord's glory endure forever, may the Lord rejoice in his works. He looks upon the earth, and makes it quake, he touches the mountains, and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live, I will praise my God as long as I last. Would that my thoughts be pleasing to him, and I will rejoice in the Lord. May the sinners vanish from the earth, and the wicked be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul! Psalm 104 Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name; declare his works among the Gentiles: Sing to him, yea, sing praises to him; speak of his wonderful deeds. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek God rejoice. Seek the Lord and be strengthened; continually seek his presence. Remember the wonderful works he has wrought, his marvels and the judgments of his mouth, You seed of Abraham, his servants, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones. He himself is the Lord our God; his judgments encompass the earth. He has remembered his covenant forever, the word he has given for a thousand generations, [sic] The word he gave as a covenant to Abraham, and by his oath to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a command and to Israel as an everlasting pact. Saying, "To you will I give the land of Canaan, as your allotted inheritance," When they were few in number, a scattering of people, [sic] Wandering from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another, He let no man harm them, but rebuked some kings for their sake. "Do not touch my anointed ones, and do not harm my prophets!" He called down a famine upon the land; he cut off their sustenance. He sent a man before them; Joseph sold as a slave; They bruised his feet with shackles, he was clamped in irons, [sic] Until the time his prophecy came true: the word of the Lord proved him with fire. The king sent and released him, the prince of the people, and set him free. He made him lord over his house, and ruler over all his goods. To chasten his princes as he pleased, and teach his elders to be wise. Israel, too, came into Egypt, and Jacob settled in the land of Cham, And God increased his people greatly, and made them stronger than their enemies. And he twisted their heart to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants. He sent forth Moses his servant, and Aaron, his chosen one. He set up his signs among them and his wonders in the land of Cham. He sent out darkness, and it grew dark, and they rebelled against his words. He turned their waters into blood and destroyed their fish. He made their land swarm with frogs even in the chambers of their kings. He spoke, and the dog-fly came, and gnats throughout their borders. He turned their rain into hail, and sent flaming fire on their land. And he smote their vines and their fig trees, and broke every tree to their borders. He spoke, and the locusts came, and grubs without number, [sic] And they devoured all the grass of their land, and consumed the fruit of the fields, And he smote the first-born of their land, the first-fruits of all their pain: And he led them forth laden with silver and gold, and there was not a weakling in all their tribes. Egypt rejoiced as they departed, for the fear of them had seized it. He spread out a cloud as a cover over them, and fire to give them light at night. They asked, and the quail appeared, and he sated them with the bread of heaven. He split the rock, and the waters flowed, and rivers ran in dry places. For he remembered his sacred promise, which he had given to Abraham his servant. And he brought out his people with joy, and his chosen ones with exultation, and gave them the land of the Gentiles, And they inherited what people had labored for that they might keep his statutes and diligently observe his law. Psalm 105 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, and his loving kindness endures forever. Who shall tell the Lord's mighty deeds? Who shall make all his praises heard? Blessed are those who do justice, and behave righteously at all times. Remember us, O Lord, in your favor to your people; visit us with your deliverance. That we may see the prosperity of your elect, and rejoice in the gladness of your nation; That we may bask in glory with your inheritance. We have sinned as our fathers did, we have transgressed and done wrong. Our fathers in Egypt did not grasp your wonders, failing to remember the abundance of your mercies, but rebelled at the Red Sea. Yet, he saved them out of the hands of those who despised them; He delivered them out of the hands of the enemy. Water engulfed their oppressors: not one of them survived. And they believed his promises, and sang his praise. But in their haste they forgot his deeds; they waited not for his counsel. They gave in to wanton craving in the desert, and tempted God in the arid land. And he granted them what they asked, and filled their lives with plenty. But they provoked Moses in the camp, and Aaron, the holy one of the Lord. The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and closed upon the gathering of Abiron; And a fire was kindled in their company, and a flame consumed the sinners. And they made a calf in Choreb, and worshiped a carved image; And they exchanged their glory for the likeness of a calf that feeds on grass. They forgot the God who had saved them, who had done great deeds in Egypt, And wondrous works in the land of Cham, and fearsome deeds at the Red Sea. So he said he would destroy them, but Moses, his chosen one, stood before him at the breach To turn him away in his fierce wrath, lest he bring them to nought. And they thought nothing of the good land, and believed not his pledge. And they murmured in their tents, and did not heed the voice of the Lord. Then he raised his hand against them to strike them down in the desert, And to cast down their seed among the Gentiles, and disperse them over the lands. And they consorted with Beelphegor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead, And provoked him with their wiles, and the plague increased among them. Then Phineas stood up, and made atonement, and the plague ceased, And it was reckoned to him as righteousness and to all generations forever. And they provoked him at the water of strife, and Moses was hurt because of them. For they embittered his spirit, and he spoke rashly. They destroyed not the Gentiles, obeying the Lord's word, but mingled with them, and learned their ways. And they worshiped their graven images, and it became a snare for them. And they sacrificed their sons and daughters to devils, and shed innocent blood: The blood of their sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the idols of Channan. And the land was polluted with blood, and they defiled themselves with their misdeeds, And they went a-whoring in their pursuits. And the Lord was angry with his people, and abhorred his inheritance, And delivered them into the hands of his foes, and those who hated them ruled over them. And their enemies oppressed them, and they were humbled at their hands. Again and again did he deliver them, but they provoked him with their plotting, and they were brought low by their iniquities. Yet the Lord considered their affliction when he heard their supplication; And he remembered his covenant, and he relented in the multitude of his mercies. And compassion was roused for them from all those who had made them captive. Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the Gentiles [sic] That we may give thanks to your holy name and that we may glory in your praise. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting [sic] All the people shall say, Amen, amen! Psalm 106 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, and his merciful love endures forever: Let them say this, those who have been redeemed by the Lord, those he has delivered from the hand of the enemy, And gathered out of the countries, from the East, West and North, and from the sea. They wandered in a parched land; they found no way to a city to dwell in. While they hungered and thirsted, their life ebbed in them. And in their affliction, they cried out to the Lord, and he delivered them from their distress. And he guided them on the proper way, that they might reach a settled city. Let them bear witness to the Lord's mercies and to his wonderful works for the children of men. For he satisfied the empty soul, and filled the hungry with good things, [sic] Those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death are shackled with poversty [sic] and chains, Because they rebelled against the words of God, and scorned the will of the Most High. So their heart was cast down by affliction: they weakened, and there was no one to help, And they cried out to the Lord in their distress. And he relieved them out of their misery, and brought them out of darkness And out of the shadow of death, and he broke their bonds. Let them bear witness to the Lord's mercies and to his wonderful works for the children of men. For he shattered the brazen gates, and crushed the iron bars. He helped them out of their sinful ways, for they were laid low by their iniquities. They rejected any kind of food, so they came close to the gates of death. And they cried out to the Lord in their affliction, and he saved them from their need. He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their corruption. Let them bear witness to the Lord's mercies and to his wonderful deeds for the children of men. And let them offer him the sacrifice of praise, and proclaim his works with joy. Those who down to the sea in ships, laboring in many waters, Behold the Lord's works and his wonders in the deep. He speaks, and the stormy wind arises, and its waves are lifted up; They reach to he [sic] heavens, then plunge to the depths. Their courage melted in their plight, they reeled, they staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was for naught. And they cried out to the Lord in their distress, and he brought them out of their trouble. And he commanded the storm, and it turned to a breeze, and its billows were stilled. And people were glad because they were calmed, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them bear witness to the Lord's mercies and to his wonderful deeds for the children of men. Let them exalt him in the people's gathering, and give praise to him in the elders' council. He turns rivers into a desert, and streams of water into parched land; He turns a fruitful soil into salt marsh, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. He turns a desert into pools of water, and a parched land into running streams, And there he makes the hungry dwell, and they build for themselves cities to live in. And they sow fields and plant vineyards, which yield a harvest of fruit. And he blesses them, and they multiply greatly, and he does not reduce the number of their cattle. And then they become few, and are brought low by the trouble of evils and pain. Contempt is brought down upon their princes, and he lets them wander through a trackless lands. [sic] But he helps the needy out of poverty, and makes their families like flocks of sheep. The just shall see and rejoice, and all iniquity shall shut its mouth. Who is wise enough to observe these things, and understand the mercies of the Lord? Psalm 107 O God, my heart is ready, my heart is ready! I will sing and sing psalms in my glory. Awake, lyre and harp: I will rise at dawn. O Lord, I will give thanks to you among the people, and sing psalms to you among the Gentiles, For your mercy is great above the heavens, and your truth is like the clouds. O God, be exalted above the heavens, and your glory, over all the earth. That your beloved ones may be delivered, save with your right hand, and hear me. God has spoken in his holy place. I will be exalted and divide Sicima, and will measure out the valley of tents. Galaad is mine, and Manasses is mine, and Ephraim is a helmet for my head. Judas is my sceptre, [sic] Moab is the washbowl of my hope, Over Idumea will I cast my sandal; the Philistines are subject to me. Who will bring me into the fortified city? Or who will guide me into Idumea? Why not you, O God who rejected us? And will not you, O God, go forth with our hosts? Help us out of our tribulations, for vain is the help of man. With God, we shall do valiantly, and he will destroy our enemies. Psalm 108 O God, do not pass over my praise in silence, for the mouth of the sinner and the mouth of the wily one Have been opened against me; they have spoken against me with a crafty tongue. And they have surrounded me with words of hatred, and fought against me without cause. Repaying my love, they accused me falsely, but I continued to pray. And they returned to me evil for good and hatred for my love. Raise up a wicked man against him, and let the accuser stand at his right hand. When he is judged, let him go forth condemned, and let his prayer become evil. Let his days be few, and may another take his office. Let his children become orphans, and his wife a widow. Let his children become wandering beggars; cast them out of their homes. Let his creditors seize all his goods, and strangers plunder the fruit of his toil. Let him have no one to help him, nor anyone to have mercy on his orphans. Let his posterity be doomed to extinction and his name be wiped out in a single generation. Let his father's sins be remembered before the Lord, and may his mother's sins not be blotted out. Let them be continually before the Lord, and may their memory pass from the earth. For he did not remember to show kindness, but hounded to death the wretched and poor, and pursued the brokenhearted. He also loved to curse, and may it come back upon him. And he took no pleasure in blessing, so may it be far from him. Yea, he wore cursing as a garment, and it seeped like water in his guts, or oil in his bones. Let it be to him as clothing he wears, as a girdle always about him. This is how the Lord deals with those who falsely accuse me, with those who speak evil against me. But you, Lord, Lord, treat me as befits your name, for your merciful love is a boon. Deliver me, for I am poor and needy, and my heart is troubled within me. I am passing away like a vanishing shadow, shaken off like locusts. My knees are weakened from fasting, and my flesh is wasted for lack of oil. And I myself became a thing of scorn to them: when they saw me, they wagged their heads. Help me, O Lord my God, and save me according to your steadfast love. And let people know this is your hand and that you, O Lord, have done this. Let them curse, but you will bless; let my opponents be dishonored, but let your servant rejoice. Let my detractors be clothed with shame, let them wear their disgrace as a mantle. I will give abundant thanks to the Lord with my mouth, and I will praise him in the midst of a throng, For he stood at the right hand of the poor man to save me from those who seek my life. Psalm 109 The Lord said to my lord, "Sit on my right until I make your enemies your footstool." The Lord shall send you a scepter of power out of Sion: reign in the midst of your enemies. Yours will be the rule on the day of your power, in the splendor of your holy ones. Before the morning star, like the dew, I have begotten you. The Lord has sworn, and will not repent: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchisedec." The Lord at your right hand has dashed kings to pieces on the day of his anger. He shall judge the nations and multiply corpses, he shall crush the heads of many on earth. On the way, he shall drink from the brook, therefore he shall lift up his head. Psalm 110 O Lord, I will praise you with all my heart in the council of the just and in the congregation. Great are the works of the Lord conforming to his will in every way. Thanksgiving and honor are due to his works, and his justice endures for ever and ever. He has wrought his marvels to be remembered. The Lord is merciful and gracious. He gave food to those who feared him; he will remember his covenant forever. He declared to his people the power of his works by giving them the Gentiles' inheritance. The works of his hands are truth and judgment; all his commands are trustworthy, Established for ever and ever, founded on truth and righteousness. He sent redemption to his people; he commanded his covenant to stand forever: Holy and awesome is his name. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: discernment comes to all who follow it. His praise endures for ever and ever. Psalm 111 Blessed is the man who fears the Lord: he will find great joy in his decrees. His seed shall be powerful on earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed; Glory and wealth shall fill his house, and his righteousness shall last for evermore. For the just, he is a light risen out of darkness: he is kind and merciful and fair. The good man is one who pities and lends: he will run his affairs with sound judgment. For he shall never be made to waver: the just shall be remembered forever. He shall not be afraid of damaging rumors: his heart is ready to trust the Lord. His heart is steadfast: he shall not fear until he can gloat over his enemies. He has lavished his wealth in giving to the poor. His justice endures for ever and ever; his horn shall be exalted with honor. The wicked man shall see and be angry: he shall gnash his teeth and burn in wrath. The sinner's desire shall come to nought. [sic] Psalm 112 Praise the Lord, O you his servants, praise the name of the Lord. Let the name of the Lord be blessed from now until the end of ages. From the rising of the sun until its setting, may the name of the Lord be praised. The Lord is high above all the nations, his glory is higher than the heavens. Who is like the Lord our God who dwells in high places, and [sic] looks upon lowly things in heaven and on earth? Who lifts up the poor from the dust, and raises the needy from the dunghill, To seat him with the princes, the very leaders of his people? Who settles the barren woman in a home, as a mother rejoicing over children? Psalm 113 When Israel, of the house of Jacob, left Egypt escaping from an alien people, Judea became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion. The sea beheld it and fled; the Jordan flowed back to its source; The mountains skipped like rams, and the hills like lambs. What was it, O sea, that made you flee, and you, Jordan, that made you reverse your flow? And you, mountains, why did you skip like rams, and you, hills, like lambs? The earth trembled in the presence of the Lord, in the presence of the God of Jacob [sic] Who turned the rock into pools of water, and flint into fountains of water. Psalm 114 Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory. Because of your kindness and your truthfulness,, [sic] Lest at any time the nations say, "Where is their God?" But our God has done whatever he willed in heaven and on earth. The idols of the Gentiles are silver and gold, the works of men's hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak: they have eyes, but cannot see; They have ears, but cannot hear; they have noses, but cannot smell; They have hands, but cannot feel; they have feet, but cannot walk. They cannot make a sound in their throat. Let their makers become like them, and all who trust in them. But the house of Israel trusts in the Lord; he is their help and defense. The house of Aaron trusts in the Lord; he is their help and their protection. Those who fear the Lord trust in the Lord; he is their helper and defender [sic] The Lord has remembered us, and blessed us; he has blessed the house of Israel, he has blessed the house of Aaron. He has blessed those who fear the Lord, the humble together with the great. May the Lord bring prosperity to you and to your children. You are the blessed ones of the Lord who made heaven and earth. The heaven of heavens is the Lord's, but he has given the earth to the children of men. The dead will not praise, [sic] you, O Lord, nor any of those who go down to Hades; But we the living will bless the Lord, from now until ages of ages. Psalm 115 I am glad, for the Lord will hear my plea, for he has inclined his ear to me. Therefore I will call upon him as long as I live. The throes of death surrounded me; the threat of hell lay hold of me: affliction and sorrow seized me. Then I called upon the Lord's name: "O Lord, save my life!" The Lord is merciful and fair, and our God is compassionate. The Lord preserves the simple-hearted; I was brought low, and he delivered me. Return to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has been bountiful to you, For he has saved my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from faltering. I will be pleasing to the Lord in the land of the living! I believed, wherefore I have spoken, but I was directly afflicted, [sic] And I said in my panic, "All men are faithless!" What can I give in return to the Lord for all he has lavished on me? I will take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his holy ones. O Lord, I am your servant, your servant and the son of your handmaid. you [sic] have burst my bonds asunder. I will offer you the sacrifice of praise and call upon the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people, In the courts of the Lord's house, in your midst, O Jerusalem! Psalm 116 Praise the Lord, all you nations, exalt him all you peoples. For mighty is his love for us, and the truthfulness of the Lord endures forever. Psalm 117 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, and his merciful love endures forever. Let, then, the house of Israel say he is good, for his merciful love endures forever. Let, then, the house of Aaron say he is good, for his merciful love endures forever. Let, then, all who fear the Lord say he is good, for his merciful love endures forever. Out of my affliction, I cried to the Lord, he heard me and brought me to wide open spaces. The Lord is my helper. I shall not fear what man may do to me. In my distress, I called upon the Lord [sic] He answered by setting me free. The Lord is my support: I will not fear what man may do to me. The Lord is my helper, and I will master my enemies. Better to rely on the Lord than on man; better to trust in the Lord than in princes. All the Gentiles surrounded me, but I fought them back in the Lord's name. Encircling me, they throttled me, but I fought them back in the Lord's name. They surrounded me like bees on a honeycomb, but they blazed like thorns on fire [sic] And I fought them back in the name of the Lord. I was hard pressed, about to fall, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my song, and has become my salvation. The tents of the just resound with joy and victory. The right hand of the Lord has acted mightily. The right hand of the Lord has exalted me; the right hand of the Lord has acted mightily. I shall recount the works of the Lord: while chastising me, The Lord has corrected me, but he has not given me up to death. Open to me the gates of justice: Entering, I will give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord: the just shall enter through it. I will give thanks to you, for you listened to me and became my salvation. The stone the builders had rejected, this very one became the cornerstone. This came about through the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made: let us exult and rejoice in it. O Lord, save us now! O Lord [sic] prosper us now! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord. God is the Lord, and he has shined upon us. Celebrate the feast with leafy boughs up to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, and I will exalt you, [sic] I will give thanks to you, because you heard me, and have become my salvation. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, and his merciful love endures forever. Psalm 118 ALEPH Blessed are those whose way is blameless [sic] who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who study his revelations: they will pursue him wholeheartedly. For those who work iniquity have not walked in his ways. You have entrusted us with your commands to be obeyed with care. Oh, that my ways be so directed as to fulfill your decrees! Then shall I not be ashamed when I observe all your statutes. I will give you thanks with uprightness of heart as I learn the judgments of your justice. I will observe your statutes: do not forsake me utterly! BETH How shall a young man keep a straight course? By keeping your words. I have sought you with all my heart: let me not stray from your commands. I have hidden your sayings in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord! Teach me your statutes. With my lips I have declared all the judgments of your mouth. I have delighted in the way of your revelations, as much as in every kind of wealth. I will meditate on your precepts, and give thought to your ways. I will study your judgments, and not forget your words. GIMEL Grant this boon to your servant: That I may live and keep your words. Remove the veil from my eyes, that I may see the wonders in your law. I am a stranger on the earth: hide not your commands from me; my soul has always longed for your judgments. You have rebuked the proud. Cursed are those who reject your commands. Remove from me reproach and contempt, for I have sought your reveleations, For priests sat and mocked me, but your servant meditated on your laws. For your revelations are my concern, and your commands are my counselors. DALETH I lie prostrate in the dust [sic] quicken me according to your word. I declared my ways, and you heard me: teach me your statutes. Show me the way of your precepts, and I shall meditate on your marvels. My soul has grown weary from sorrow: strengthen me with your words. Remove from me the way of iniquity, and favor me with your law; I have chosen the way of truth, and not forgotten your judgments. Lord, I have held fast to your precepts: put me not to shame. I have run the way of your commands as you broadened my heart. HE O Lord, teach me the way of your commands, and I will always seek it out. Give me discernment that I may seek your law, and keep it with my whole heart. Guide me in the way of your commands, for I have delighted in it; Incline my heart to your revelations, and not to greed. Avert my eyes from what is vanity; quicken me in your way; Confirm your promise to your servant, so I may revere you. Take away my reproach which I have feared, for your judgments are sound. Behold, I have desired your commands: In your righteousness, give me life. WAW And let your steadfast love come upon me, O Lord, your salvation according to your word. And I will answer those who taunt me, for I have trusted in your words. Do not strip the words of truth from my mouth, for I have hoped in your judgments. And I shall always keep your law, forever, until ages of ages. And I have walked through open spaces, for I was seeking your commands. And I bore witness to your revelations before kings, and was not ashamed. And I meditated upon your commands which I loved exceedingly. And I raised my hands to your commands, which I have loved, and meditated upon your judgments. ZAYIN Remember your word to your servant whereby you made me hope. This has comforted me in my affliction, for your promise gave me life. The proud have sinned exceedingly, but I did not swerve from your command. I remembered your eternal laws, O Lord, and was comforted. Despair took hold of me because of the sinners who spurn your law. Your commands were my songs in the place of my exile. O Lord, in the night I remembered your name, and I observed your law. This is true of me, that I carefully kept your statutes. HETH O Lord, you are my sole inheritance; I said I would keep your law. With all my heart, I sought your presence: be gracious to me according to your word. As I contemplated your ways, and turned my steps toward your revelations; I was prepared, and not afraid, to observe your commands. The snares of sinners entangled me, but I did not forget your law. I would rise at midnight to give thanks to you for the judgments of your righteousness. I am a companion of all who fear you, and of those who keep your commands. O Lord, the earth is full of your unfailing kindness: teach me your statutes. TETH You have acted kindly with your servant, O Lord, according to your word. Teach me goodness, and knowledge, and wisdom, for I believe in your commands. Before I was humbled, I had strayed, wherefore I observed your teaching. You are good, O Lord, and in your goodness, teach me your just judgments. The wrongs of the proud have grown against me, but I will observe your commands with all my heart. Their heart has been curdled like milk, but I have carefully kept your law. It is good for me that you humbled me, that I might learn your just judgments. The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands in gold and silver. YODH Your hands have made me and formed me; enlighten me that I may learn your commands. Those who fear you shall see me and be glad, for I have hoped in your words. I know, O Lord, that your judgments are just, and that you afflicted me rightly. Let your merciful love be my consolation according to your word to your servant. Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for your law is my concern. Let the proud be ashamed, for they wronged me without cause, but I will meditate on your precepts. Let those who fear you turn to me, and those who know your revelations. Let my heart be blameless in your judgments, that I may not be put to shame. KAPH My soul yearns for your deliverance; I have hoped in your words. My sight grows dim while I await for your word, saying, "When will you comfort me?" For I have shriveled like a wineskin in the frost, yet I have not forgotten your just decrees. How many are the days of your servant? When will you plead my cause against my tormentors? Transgressors have spread slander about me, but this is not according to your law, O Lord. All your commands are sure. Wrongly have they taunted me: help me! They almost made an end to me on earth, but I did not forsake your commands. Grant me life in your loving kindness, that I may keep the words of your mouth. LAMEDH O Lord, your word endures forever in heaven, and your truth, from generation to generation. You have founded the earth, and it stands fast. The day continues as you ordain, for all things are your servants. Had your law not been my concern, I would have perished in my affliction. I will never forget your statutes, for in them you have given me life. I am your own: save me, for I have sought your precepts. Sinful men ambushed me to kill me but I observed your revelations. I have seen every achievement has a limit, but your commandment is infinitely wide. MEM O Lord, how I have loved your law! It is my meditation all day long. You have made me wiser than my foes by your command, for it is with me forever. I know more than all my teachers, for your revelations are the objects of my thoughts. I have more understanding than the elders, because I have kept your commands. I have made my feet avoid all evil ways so that I may keep your words. I have not spurned your judgments, for you have instructed me. How sweet to the taste are your sayings: sweeter than honey to my mouth. I have won understanding through your commands, and so have come to hate all evil ways. NUN Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my ways. I have sworn and determined to keep the judgments of your righteousness. O Lord, I have been greatly afflicted: quicken me according to your word. O Lord, I pray accept free tribute from my mouth, and teach me your statutes. My life at all times is in your hands, and I have not forgotten your law. Wicked men have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your commands. Your revelations are my share forever, for they are the joy of my heart. In return, my heart is set on following your just judgments until ages of ages. SAMEKH I have hated transgressors, but I have loved your law. You are my refuge and my shield: I have put my hope in your words. Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God. Uphold me according to your word, and quicken me, and do not disappoint me in my hope. Sustain me, that I may be saved, and I will constantly meditate on your precepts. You despise all those who spurn your commands for their inner thought is wickedness. All the wicked of the earth I have seen as transgressors, wherefore I loved your revelations. Pierce my flesh with the fear of you, for I am in awe before your decrees. AYIN I have done what is just and right: abandon me not to my tormentors. Vouch for your servant, lest the proud accuse me falsely. My eyes have pined for your salvation, and for the word of your justice. Deal with your servant according to your kindness, and teach me your statutes. I am your servant: give me understanding, that I may know your revelations. It is time for the Lord to act: they have broken your law. Therefore I have loved your commands, more than gold or topaz; Therefore I guided myself according to your commands; I have hated every evil way. PEH Your revelations are wonderful; therefore my soul has kept them. The unveiling of your words enlighten and instruct the simple ones. I opened my mouth and sighed, for I longed for your commands. Look upon me and be gracious to me as do those who love your name. Order my steps according to your promise, and let no evil prevail over me. Deliver me from the slanders of men and I will keep your commands. Make your face shine upon your servant, and teach me your statutes. My eyes shed streams of tears whenever I failed to observe your law. SADHE Righteous are you, O Lord, and true are your judgments. By your revelations, you ordained justice and utter truthfulness. Zeal for your cause has consumed me because my enemies have forgotten your words. Your teaching has been fully tested, and your servant has loved it dearly. I am small and despised, but have not forgotten your statutes. Your justice is an everlasting justice, and your law is truth. Though affliction and want have come upon me, your commands are my delight. Your revelations are just forever; give me understanding, that I may live. QOPH I cried out with my whole heart: "Hear me, O Lord!" I will keep your statutes. I have cried out to you: save me, that I may observe your revelations. I rose at an untimely hour and cried out; I have hoped in your promises. My eyes were open before dawn that I might meditate on your sayings. Hear my voice, O Lord, in your steadfast love, quicken me in your justice. Those who pursue me wickedly have closed in, but they are far removed from your law. You are nearby, O Lord, and all your ways are truth. Long have I known from your revelations, that you have set them up for ever and ever. RESH Look upon my affliction and set me free, for I have not forgotten your law. Plead my cause and ransom me; quicken me according to your promise. Salvation is far from the wicked, for they have not sought out your commands. O Lord, many are your loving mercies: quicken me according to your justice. Many are those who oppress and pursue me, but I have not forsaken your revelations. I saw men acting foolishly, and melt away, for they observed not your teachings. Behold, I have loved your commands; O Lord, in your mercy, quicken me! The source of your words is truth, and all the decrees of your justice are forever. SHIN Princes have pursued me without cause, but my heart stands in awe of your words. I will rejoice in your sayings, as one who finds many treasures. I hate and abhor injustice, but I love your law. Seven times a day have I praised you for the fairness of your decrees. Abounding peace to those who love your law! There is no stumbling-block for them. O Lord, I have awaited your salvation, and loved your commandments. My soul has observed your revelations, and loved them exceedingly, I have kept your precepts and your decrees, for all my ways are before you, O Lord. TAW O Lord, let my prayer come before you, Give me understanding of your precepts. O Lord, let my plea come before you. Deliver me according to your word. Let my lips pour forth a hymn whenever you teach me your statutes. Let my tongue give voice to your sayings, for all your commands are fair. Let your hand be ready to save me, for I have chosen your precepts. O Lord, I have longed for your salvation, and your law is my delight. My soul shall live and praise you, and your law shall be my support. Like a lost sheep, I have gone astray. seek [sic] your servant, for I have not forgotten your commandments. Psalm 119 In my distress, I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me. O Lord, save me from lying lips, and from a treacherous tongue. What shall be given you and what more shall be done to you, you deceitful tongue? The sharpened arrows of a warrior with firebrands made of the broom tree. Woe is me that my exile has been so long; that I have set up tent in the camp of Kedar. Too long have I stayed among those who hate peace. I was peaceable, but when I spoke to them, they warred against me without cause. Psalm 120 I lifted up my eyes to the hills whence help shall come to me. My help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth. He will not suffer your foot to stumble; Nor shall the Guardian fall asleep. Behold, he will neither sleep not [sic] slumber, the Watcher over Israel [sic] The Lord will keep watch over you; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not scorch you by day, nor shall the moon fail you by night. The Lord will preserve you from every evil, the Lord will safeguard your life. The Lord will guard your coming and your going henceforth and for evermore. Psalm 121 I was happy when they said to me: "Let us go to the house of the Lord." Our feet stood within your courts, Jerusalem, Jerusalem built as a city whose people are as one. For there did the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord as it was decreed to Israel to give thanks to the name of the Lord. For there have been placed thrones for judgment, thrones for the house of David. Pray, then, for the peace of Jerusalem, and may prosperity be with those who love you, May peace be within your walls, and prosperity upon your towers. For the sake of my brethren and my friends, I have indeed asked peace for you; For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I have earnestly sought your good. Psalm 122 I have lifted up my eyes to you who dwell in heaven. As the eyes of the servants are on the hands of their masters. As the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, [sic] So our eyes are on the Lord our God until he has mercy on us. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, [sic] For we have had more than our fill of contempt: yes, our soul has been more than glutted. May disgrace fall on the prosperous, and contempt on the proud. Psalm 123 Had not the Lord been with us, let Israel now say, Had not the Lord been with us at the time men rose against us, [sic] Truly, they would have swallowed us alive when their fury was inflamed against us; Truly, the water would have drowned us, the torrent would have swept over us. Truly, the raging waters would have overwhelmed us. Blessed be the Lord who has not abandoned us as prey to their teeth. Like a bird of passage we were rescued from the fowler's net. The snare was torn asunder, and we escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124 Those who trust in the Lord are like mount [sic] Sion Which cannot be moved, which shall stand forever. Mountains are all around Jerusalem, as the Lord is around his people, now and forever. For the Lord will not let the scepter of the wicked rule over the land of the just, [sic] Lest the just themselves apply their hand to iniquities. Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, and to those whose heart is upright. But those who stray into crooked ways, the Lord will expel with the evildoers. Peace upon Israel! Psalm 125 When the Lord returned the captives of Sion, we were like men dreaming. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue, with rejoicing. Then it was said among the Gentiles, "The Lord has done great things for them." The Lord has done great things for us: we have been made to rejoice. O Lord, return our captives as streams return to the south. Those who weep as they sow shall rejoice as they reap. Though they went forth shedding tears as they scattered their seeds, They shall return rejoicing, bearing with them their sheaves. Psalm 126 Unless the Lord build the house, in vain do the builders toil; Unless the Lord guard the city, in vain does the watchman keep watch. In vain do you rise early: you get up after rest only to eat the bread of grief For he provides for his beloved while they sleep. Behold, the Lord's inheritance is children, and his reward, the fruit of the womb. As arrows in the hand of a mighty warrior, so are the children of the exiles. Blessed the man who will be able to fill his quiver with them: They shall never be put to shame when they meet their foes at the gates. Psalm 127 Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways. You shall eat of your hand's labor: blessed are you, and it shall be well with you. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your house: Your children, like olive shoots around your table. Behold, in this way shall be blessed the man who fears the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Sion, and may you see the wealth of Jerusalem all the days of your life. And may you see your children's children. Peace upon Israel! Psalm 128 Often have they assailed me since my youth: let Israel say it! Often have they assailed me since my youth, but they have not prevailed over me. The wicked plowed my back: they increased their iniquity. But the righteous Lord has cut asunder the necks of the sinners. Let them all be confounded and turned back, those who hate Sion: Let them become like grass on the house-tops which withers before it can sprout; [sic] With which the reaper fills not his hand, nor the binder of sheaves his arms, While those who pass by do not say, "The blessing of the Lord be upon you!" We have blessed you in the name of the Lord. Psalm 129 Out of the depths, I have cried out to you: Lord, O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the sound of my plea. If you retain sins, Lord, O Lord, who can stand? With you there is forgiveness. For your name's sake, O Lord, I have waited for you. My soul has waited for your promise, my soul has hoped in the Lord. My soul has trusted in the Lord. from [sic] the morning watch till night. Let Israel hoe in the Lord, for with the Lord is steadfast love and in him is full redemption, And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities. Psalm 130 O Lord, my heart is not uplifted, nor are my eyes upraised. I have not busied myself with lofty pursuits, nor with wonders too great for me. If I have failed to remain humble, but instead have exalted my soul, As a weaned child is treated by its mother, so will you deal with my soul. Let Israel hope in the Lord, henceforth and forever. Psalm 131 O Lord, remember David and all his forbearance, How he swore to the Lord, and made a vow to the God of Jacob: "I will not enter the tent, my abode, nor get up on the couch of my repose; I will give no sleep to my eyes, nor to my eyelids any slumber, nor to my temples any rest, [sic] "Until I find a place for the Lord, a tabernacle for the God of Jacob." Behold, I have heard of it in Ephrata: we found it in forest clearings. Let us enter into his tabernacles, let us worship where his feet once stood. Arise, O Lord, and go up to your rest, you and the ark of your holiness. May your priests be clothed in righteousness, and your faithful ones rejoice. For the sake of David your servant, turn not away the face of your anointed one. The Lord swore to David a promise which he will not retract: "One of your own flesh I will place on your throne. "If your sons will keep my covenant and the revelations I will offer them, Their sons also shall be seated upon your throne for evermore." For the Lord has elected Sion, he has chosen it for his dwelling: "This is my home for ever and ever; here I will dwell because I have chosen it. "I will bless abundantly her provisions; I will feed her poor with bread; I will clothe her priests with salvation, and the faithful shall exult with joy. "There will I raise the pride of David; I have readied a lamp for my anointed on. I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on him my crown shall shine." Psalm 132 Behold how good and pleasant it is for brothers to dwell in unity: It is as ointment upon the head, which runs down over the beard, The beard of Aaron, runs down to the hem of his garment. It is like the dew of Hermon which falls on the mountains of Sion, For there the Lord ordained the blessing: life for evermore. Psalm 133 Behold now, bless the Lord all you servants of the Lord Who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. By night, lift up your hands to the holy places, and bless the Lord. May the Lord who made heaven and earth bless you out of Sion. Psalm 134 Praise the name of the Lord: praise the Lord, you servants Who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good, sing praise to his name, for it is excellent. For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself, and Israel as his own. For I know the Lord is great and our Lord is above all gods. And that whatever the Lord willed, he brought into being. In heaven and earth, in all the seas and all the depths, By raising the clouds from the ends of the earth, he made thunderstorms to bring rain, he drew the winds out of his treasury. He it is who smote the first-born of Egypt, both of man and beast, He sent signs and portents into your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants. He it is who smote many nations, and slew mighty kings: Seon, King [sic] of the Amorites, and Og, king of Basan, and all those enthroned in Chanaan. [sic] And he gave their land as inheritance as inheritance to his people Israel. O Lord, your name endures forever, and your renown, from age to age. For the Lord will vindicate his people, and comfort those who serve him. Pagan idols are but silver and gold, the handiwork of men. They have a mouth, but do not speak; they have eyes, but to not see; They have ears, but to not hear, for there is no breath in their mouth. Sing out to the Lord of lord, for his merciful love endures forever! Psalm 137 O Lord, I will give thanks to you with my whole heart, And I will sing psalms to you in the presence of the angels. Because you have heard all the words of my mouth, I will bow before your holy temple and give thanks to your name, [sic] Because of your kindness and your truth, for you have magnified your holy name above all things. On whatever day I call upon you, answer me soon. You will lavish your peace upon my soul. O Lord, let all the kings of the earth give thanks to you, For they have heard all the words of your mouth. And let them sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord. For though the Lord is high, yet he regards the lowly, and looks upon the haughty from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you will quicken me. You have stretched forth your hand against my enemies' wrath, and your right hand has saved me. O Lord, you will repay them on my behalf, O Lord, For your merciful love endures forever. Do not forsake the works of your hands. Psalm 138 O Lord, you have put me to the test, and known me. You have known me as I sat down and got up; you understand my thoughts from afar. You have traced my walk and my sleep, and have foreseen all my ways. There is no sinful word on my tongue. Behold, O Lord, you have known all things: [sic] The last and the first. [sic] You have made me and laid your hand upon me. Knowing you is too much for me: it is too great and beyond my reach. Where shall I go from your spirit, and where shall I flee from your presence? If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to Hades, there you are. If I open my wings and fly into the dawn, and settle in the farthest limits of the sea, Even there your hand would guide me, and your right hand would hold me fast. Then I said, "Surely darkness will hide me," but the night shall reveal my carousing; Darkness will not be dark with you, and the night will be as bright as day. To you, dark and light are the same. For you, O Lord, have owned by inmost being; you have supported me from my mother's womb. I will give you thanks, for you are awesomely wonderful. Your works are marvelous, and my soul knows it well. My frame which you made in secret was not hidden from you, [sic] Nor was my being, in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance and all of it shall be written in your book, formed in a day before anything existed. But I have greatly honored your friends, O Lord, their influence has been much increased [sic] I would count them, but they would outnumber the grains of sand. I awake, and am still with you. Oh, that you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you men of blood! For you will say, concerning their thoughts. [sic] "They shall take your cities in vain." O Lord, have I not hated those who hate you, and wasted away because of your enemies? I have hated them with utter hatred: they have become my own enemies. Put me to the test, O Lord, and understand my heart. See if any evil is in me, and lead me on an eternal path. Psalm 139 O Lord, save me from the sinful man, deliver me from the violent man. Who have devised evil in their heart: all day long they stir up conflict. They have sharpened their tongue as that of a snake. The poison of asps is upon their lips. Protect me, O Lord, from the hand of the wicked. Rescue me from unjust men who plot to trip me up. Arrogant men have hidden a snare for me, and stretched a rope as a trap for my feet. They have set a stumbling block for me along the path. I have said to the Lord, "You are my God: Listen, Lord, to the voice of my prayer." Lord, Lord, power of my salvation, you have shielded my head on the day of battle. O Lord, leave me not to the will of the wicked: They have plotted against me: lest they be exalted, abandon me not. Those who surround me lift up their heads [sic] May the mischief of their lips overwhelm them. May burning embers cover them on earth; cast them down in misery, never to rise. A slanderer shall not prosper on earth; evils shall hunt down the violent to destruction. I know the Lord will render justice to the poor and plead the cause of the downtrodden. Surely the just shall give thanks to your name: the upright shall dwell in your presence. Psalm 140 O Lord, I have cried out to you: hear me; hearken to the voice of my prayer as I cry out to you. Let my prayer rise as incense before you: and the lifting of my hands, as an evening sacrifice. Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth, and a gate to contain my lips. Let not my heart incline to evil deeds, to finding excuses for sinful doings In [sic] the company of men who work iniquity, [sic] And I will not partake of their delicacies. Let the just man chasten me with kindness and chide me. But the oil of the wicked shall never touch my head, yet even then would I pray for their good will. Their judges were dashed against the rock: they shall hear my words, how sweet they are. As a lump of clay broken on the ground, so our bones were strewn near the grave. On you, Lord, O Lord, my eyes are fixed; in you have I trusted: take not my life. Keep me from the snare which they have set for me, [sic] The wicked shall fall into their own nets, while I alone escape. Psalm 141 With my voice, I cried out to the Lord, with my voice, I implored the Lord. Before him, I will pour out my prayer; in his presence, I will tell of my distress. When my spirit was fainting within me, you knew my paths. On that very road I was walking, they set a trap for me. I looked to my right and observed: no one was aware of me. I had no means of escape: no one would take care of my life. I cried out to you, O Lord, and said, "You are my hope, my share in the land of the living. Attend to my supplication, for I am laid very low. "Deliver me from my oppressors, for they are too strong for me. Release me from prison, that I may give thanks to your name." The just shall gather around me when you give me my due reward. Psalm 142 O Lord, hear my prayer; in your truthfulness, give heed to my plea, and in your righteousness, answer me; And enter not into judgment with your servant, since of all the living, none is just in your sight. The enemy has hunted me down; he has crushed my life into the ground; He has forced me to live in darkness like those long dead. My spirit faints with grief, and within me, my heart is in despair [sic] I recalled the days of old, I meditated on all your deeds, I pondered the works of your hands. I stretched out my hand to you; like a parched land, my soul thirst for you. Make haste to answer me, O Lord: my spirit has failed me. Turn not your face away from me, lest I be like those in the pit; Grant that I may hear your steadfast love at dawn, for I have put my hope in you. O Lord, teach me the way I should go, for I have lifted up my soul to you. O Lord, deliver me from my enemies: it is to you that I have fled. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your good Spirit lead me on a straight path. For the sake of your name, O Lord, you will keep me alive; In your righteousness, you will deliver me from affliction. And in your loving kindness, you will destroy my enemies, And bring to nought [sic] all those who oppress me, for I am your servant. Psalm 143 Blessed be the Lord my God who trains my hand for battle and my fingers for war, My rock and refuge, my stronghold and deliverer, my shield in whom I have trusted, who subdues my people under me. Lord, what is man that you have shown yourself to him, and the son of man that you give thought to him? Man may be likened to vanity: his days pass like a shadow. O Lord, incline your heavens and come down; touch the mountains, and they shall smoke. Send lightning, and you will scatter them; shoot your arrows, and you will put them to rout. Send forth your hand from on high; rescue me and save me from deep waters, Out of the hands of aliens whose mouth has spoken falsehood, whose right hand is raised in perjury. O God, I will sing a new song to you; I will play for you on a ten-string [sic] lyre, To him who gives victory to kings, who save his servant David from the evil sword. Rescue me and deliver me out of the hand of aliens Whose every word is falsehood, whose right hand is raised in perjury, [sic] Whose sons are like plants well nurtured in their prime; Whose daughters are made up, adorned like temple images. Their storehouses are full, bursting with all manner of goods; Their sheep are prolific, multiplying as they go. Their oxen are fat, there are no fallen fences nor breaches in the walls, nor outcries in the streets. Men bless the people whose lot this is, but blessed is the people whose Lord is their God! Psalm 144 I will exalt you, my God and my king, [sic] and bless your name for ever and ever. Every day I will bless you, and praise your name for ever and ever. The Lord is great and greatly to be praise, and to his greatness there is no end. Age after age will praise your works, and proclaim your might. They will tell the glorious splendor of your holiness, they will recount your wondrous works; They will speak of the power of your awesome deeds, they will declare your greatness. They will recall your abundant goodness and will exult in your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and merciful: he is long-suffering and abounding in love. The Lord is good towards everyone, and his grace extends over all his works. Let all your works give thanks to you, Lord, and all your faithful ones bless you. They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power, To make known your might to the children of men, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages and your dominion is for all generations. The Lord keeps faith in all his promises and is hallowed in all his works. The Lord supports all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down. They eyes of all look up to you, and you give them their food in due season. You open your hands and satisfy all living beings, The Lord is just in all his ways, and faithful in all his works. The Lord is close to all who pray to him, those who call upon him in truth. He will meet the desire of those who fear him, and hear their pleas and save them. The Lord keeps watch over those who love him, but the wicked he will utterly destroy. My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name, for ever and to all eternity. Psalm 145 Praise the Lord, O my soul! I will praise the Lord all my life [sic] I will sing to the Lord as long as I live. Trust not in princes, nor in the sons of men in whom there is no salvation. When his breath is spent he shall return to his earth. On that very day shall perish all things he had planned. Happy the man whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God. The one who made heaven and earth, the sea and all things within it, Who keeps the faith forever, securing justice for the oppressed and giving food to the hungry. The Lord sets captives free, the Lord gives skill to the blind. The Lord raises the broken, the Lord loves the upright. The Lord will protect strangers and sustain orphan and widow, But he will thwart the way of the wicked, The [sic] Lord King forever, your eternal God, O Sion! Psalm 146 Praise the Lord, for singing psalms is good; it is sweet to praise God; The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem, and will gather the scattered ones of Israel, [sic] He restores the broken-hearted, and binds up their wounds. He counts the multitude of stars, and call them all by name. Great is our Lord, and great is his might, and there is no bound to his wisdom. The lord [sic] raises the meek, but casts down the wicked to the ground. Start out with a paean of praise to the Lord, sing praise with the harp to our God Who covers the heavens with clouds, who provides rain for the earth, [sic] Who causes grass to grow on the mountains, and vegetables for the needs of men; And gives their food to the cattle, and to young ravens that call upon him. Who causes grass to grow on the mountains, and vegetables for the needs of men; And gives their food to the cattle, and to young ravens that call upon him. He will not delight in the strength of a horse, nor is he impressed with the runner's legs: The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, and in all who hope for his loving mercy. Psalm 147 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem, praise your God, O Sion! For he has strengthened the bars of your gates, he has blessed your children within you. He has established peace inside your borders, and fills you with the choicest wheat. He sends his oracles to the earth: his word runs swiftly. When he showers snow thick as wool, and scatters hoar-frost like ashes; When he strews his hailstone like crumbs, who can withstand his cold? He shall send out his word and melt them, he shall blow with his breath and make the waters flow. He declares his promise to Jacob, his statutes and ordinances to Israel. To no other nation has he done such thing, nor has he made clear his laws to them. Psalm 148 Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights. Praise him, all you his angels, praise him, all you his hosts. Praise him, sun and moon; Praise him, all you shining starts; Praise him, you heavens of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the Lord, for at his word, they came to be. He commanded, they were created. He established them for all eternity and forever, by a command that shall not pass away. Praise the Lord from out of the earth, you serpents and all you depths; Fire and hail, snow and ice, tempest winds, that obey his word; [sic] You mountains and all you hills, fruit-bearing trees and all you cedars, Savage beasts and all you cattle, crawling things and all you winged birds; [sic] Kings of the earth, and all you nations, princes and all you judges of the earth, Young men and maidens, elders and young together: give praise to the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted. His exaltation is above earth and heaven. He will raise up a horn to his people, A praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. Psalm 149 Sing to the Lord a new song: his praise in the assembly of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in his maker, and the sons of Sion rejoice in their king. Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him on the timbrel and the lyre, For the Lord is well pleased with his people: he will exalt the humble with victory. Let the faithful triumph in glory and sing for joy on their couches. Let high praise of God be on their lips, and double-edged swords in their hands, [sic] To wreak vengeance upon the nations, and chastisement upon the peoples; To bind their kinds with fetters, and their nobles with iron bonds. To execute on them the written judgment: this is glory for all his faithful. Psalm 150 Praise the Lord in his holy places, praise him in the firmament of his strength! Praise him for his mighty deeds, praise him for the fullness of his majesty. Praise him with the blast of the trumpet [sic] praise him with the harp and the lyre! Praise him with timbrel and dance, praise him with strings and pipes! Praise him with resounding cymbals, praise him with cymbals of triumph! Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
